Originally granted as Harwich, for Wills Hill, Earl of Hillsborough and Baron Harwich. The men who received the grant from Benning Wentworth, from Nine Partners (now Amenia), New York, had previously asked New York for a patent and had been refused.

The name was changed in 1803, mostly because of the similarity with Hardwick, and mail was always going to the wrong town. There is absolutely no doubt as to who the new name was honoring: Gideon Tabor, a Revolutionary War veteran with four years of service, who arrived in town in 1784. By the time he died in 1824, he had been Town Clerk for 28 years and Representative to the Legislature and Justice of the Peace for 30 years.

Today, all but about 3,000 acres of the town are part of the Green Mountain National Forest.

Utilities

Notes about utilities:

  • One electric or phone company indicates that company serves the entire town. More than one of either indicates each serves different areas of town.
  • A listed cable company MIGHT mean the entire town is covered, but not necessarily. More than one listed indicates each serves different areas of town.
  • Unless your area is one served by Vermont's only gas utility, your only option is bottled gas (any dealer).
