STORY HOW DID I COME BY THESE 1940s FOUNTAIN PENS
BACKGROUND:
It’s about 70 years ago when the world war 2 just ended, it was the era when Japan was trying to revive from the shock from the war and stand on our own feet. As a nation, we tried to live our life with honor and dignity.
This year, as we know, marks the seventieth birthday of “postwar Japan.” Having written that, I am struck by the strangeness of it. After all, 70 years is a very, very long time—an entire lifetime for an individual human being. I was only 20 years old, I still remember. Make no mistake; World War II was a huge turning point for Japan. A second defining characteristic of postwar Japan has been its great prosperity. Rising from the ashes of World War II, the postwar economy grew at an astonishing rate, aided by a number of fortuitous circumstances.

A GOLDEN ERA FOR FOUNTAIN PENS:
It was the golden age of our fountain pen making, more than hundreds of stationary factories were producing fountain pens. The giant 3 Pilot, Sailor, platinum used to make products for other stationary companies and at the same time they used to outsource the nibs from other factories. So, it was the era where everyone tried to work with each other and made the fortune that we have today. The companies that we had back in 1940s, they do not exist anymore, but you can still come by the pens once in a while on the sale or the pens when were passed down by our forefathers as s memorial of those days to remember ourselves “Never Give Up”.
I consider myself lucky finding a treasure in my father’s desk, I found few fountain pens that I knew existed when I was in my 20s back in 1940s. But after that I never came by one. So, my curious mind could not wait any longer, I rushed to my desk, filled the pens with ink and tried to write with them. I found 5 fountain pens in my father’s desk, 3 of them were Ebonite made Urushi piston stopper, the mechanism that you can only see in the high end Namiki or Dunhill pens. Other two was polished Ebonite and Celluloid made pens. Since I am a fountain pen enthusiastic and a collector myself, I wanted to know where these fountain pen came from, so, I asked my 95 years old father who taught me write with fountain pens. He told me these fountain pens are very special that’s why he kept all these years with him. The shininess did not fade away at all even though the pens passed though more than 70 years.
WHY I LOVE CELLULOID PENS:
He showed me some celluloid models, I have to say these celluloids are way much better then any of the celluloid available in the market. Platinum makes their celluloid pens in rolling process but back in 1940s celluloid pens were made and shaped out from celluloid sticks. The colors of the celluloid are very rich, and the white part has changed to a beautiful gold color over the years approximately half a century and it has a beautiful transparent feeling. Also, its color combination seems like component of celluloid complicatedly reflecting light from its body, it is exactly a work of art and truly amazing.
Celluloid Pen
Lifting the lever compresses the ink sac; after placing the nib in ink, close the lever and count to ten to allow the sac to reinflate completely. For those few lever-fillers with internal breather tubes (some Skylines, for example), repeating the above procedure for a second time may fill the sac more completely. If no bubbles appear in the ink, however, the repetition is unnecessary.Occasionally one will run across two-piece jointed levers; these function just like conventional levers. An exception is the system used on the Waterman Ink-Vue pens of the late 1930s and early 1940s, which is actually a hybrid using the lever as a pump. Ink-Vue levers must be operated repeatedly, until bubbles are no longer expelled with each stroke. Lever-fillers are simple and robust, and generally quite easy to repair. It is important not to force a stuck lever against an old hardened sac.
MAINTANANCE & CARE:
Even if the pens passed though about half a century, cherished the owner of the Japanese manufacturer as I mentioned before kept it beautifully. Under the guidance of his craftsmanship, he taught me how to repair or replace the parts of the pen one by one. He told me, since each of pens are handmade and the mechanism are not available anymore, it will be very hard to repair or replace the pen if you have any maintenance problems. However, please do not worry, I will help you with servicing if you have any problem. All the pens are brand new, was there in stock for a long time. But I have tested the filling system for each to make sure you get the pen in the best condition for writing. Please kindly learn about the vintage pens and how they work before using them. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
I bought many fountain pens of these kind and are celluloid or ebonite made or unique material from his technology. It seems to be very comfortable fountain pens to use for long periods of time and the pattern of the body is very beautiful until now and a piece of art. It is a dream to write with and by far one of the best gorgeous fountain pens that I have ever had in my hands. Or I would just say this is the one, one that will blow your mind. All the pens are brand new and was in stock in the factory for more than 70 years. I have tesed the filling system, body and also the nib section and all in perfect condition. Writing with the nib is very fine and barely has any response to the paper. The nib is semi-flex and quite comfortable. Nibs will give quite a line variation to your writing. You would love the pens that same way i do.
I really like the design of the pen. It is a lightweight pen and the balance is perfect. Since it has passed quite a bit time since production, please be aware of some mild rusting that is shown in the pictures, you may not see them because it is so minor but I mention anyway. For details, please check the photos. I tried my best with the pictures for you.
