This is an Exceptionally Rare and Unique Antique Fine 3 Dimensionally hand Sculptured Exhibition Quality American Eagle head with glass eyes self defense double edged dagger self defense weapon, custom made for a Patriotic American Gentleman; with the orginal silver mounted sheath, by Woodcock / Sheffield, Circa 1835. Any dagger with a super rare carved cross guard is unheard of. The only other carved cross guards I have ever seen was on a matching set of 3 Exhibition Bowie knives with serpentine etched blades I previously owned. The 14" long Master Bowie was sculptured from a single block of steel, and the two others had carved hilts and cross guards with gold etching.
This is an extremely high quality, one-of-a-kind Exhibition knife made in Sheffield, Old England, the knife capitol of the world at the time and for hundreds of years prior. Woodcock was a Premier Maker but rarely encountered Sheffield Cutler from the early 1800's. I have only seen a handful of knives made by him; and he is not mentioned in any known Antique knife reference books. In my opinion, he made some of the best hand made cutlery ever produced. All of his knife patterns are unique, custom made to order, such as this piece. Another known similar 1830's Woodcock example I owned was a carved Horsehead hilt (also with glass eyes) single bladed quill knife in mint condition with the Maker marked on the ricasso "W (crown mark) R" above "WOODCOCK" (1830 - 1837 period) stamping. This mark suggested that the Cutler had a Royal Warrant to manufacture cutlery for the Royal Family. However, there were only 3 cutlers given this prestigious award; and other Makers without Royal Warrants also marked their knives with this mark. The W crown R marking was only used during the reign of King William who ruled England from 1830 to 1837. Upon his death, his oldest daughter became Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901, and the V crown R marking began.
During most of the 19th century there was little law and order; and it was "every man for himself". Men were constantly at risk of being waylaid by thugs, ner' do goods, thieves, robbers and bandits. Men typically carried a single shot cap and ball percussion pistol, or brace (pair) of pistols for self-protection. American Patterson revolvers were not invented until 1836, and only an affluent gentleman could have afforded one. It wasn't until the Colt 1849 Pocket model percussion (loose powder, cap & ball) revolver was introduced that most men could afford to purchase and carry a multi-shot pistol for self protection. Thus, Gentlemen would typically carry a fixed blade dirk or Bowie as a side knife on their belt or in their waistband or sash as a back-up (or sometimes as a primary) weapon. Men of means wanted fancy goods, and a Sheffield double edged dagger self defense knife was not only a necessity, but also were favored by affluent Gentlemen and gamblers as an important accoutrement and fashion statement. This one-of-a-kind Exhibition double edged dagger not only fulfilled the need for a weapon, but also has the Wow factor; then, as now. Fancy dirks and daggers continued to be carried for decades as a side arm after the states banned carrying firearms.
Only a wealthy and learned Gentleman Patriot during this early 1830's period would have been able to afford a fancy carved quality American Eagle Head with glass eyes double edged self defense weapon like this one. These early double edged dagger weapons were completely hand made by Master Sheffield Cutlers; i.e., hand forged, hand ground, hand fitted, hand polished; i.e., completely hand made, using only simple hand tools; and were created for self defense. The late great Grand Daddy of Bowie knives Bill Williamson wrote that 95% of all early Sheffield knives were imported into America. Given this early American heritage and legacy, this Eagle head early self defense weapon falls into the category of edged weapons made only for personal self-defense purposes; and thus have the accompanying Mano-a-Mano romance and history associated with this early period of American history.
This piece is a rare Exhibition quality 1830's Sheffield Dagger, with very few examples surviving in fine condition; especially with the original silver mounted sheath. The Sheffield knife exhibitions began with the London Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851. Thus, this piece could have been made for a Exhibition or as a Showroom display piece as the ricasso is stamped on both side, as was done for Exhibition and showroom display knives. However, this piece predates most exhibitions, as evidenced by the very early 1830's ricasso stamping, "CELEBRATED DIRK KNIFE" on both sides. Celebrated, along with Superior, Splendid, et, al., are all very early monikers used during the 1830's. In Sheffield, there were only a handful of Cutlers who had workmen with this level of Artistry and Craftsmanship; and a Wealthy Gentleman could custom order any knife he wanted that he could afford to pay for.
This is the crème`-de-la-crème` of Fine Sheffield Exhibition quality self defense weapons. This is one of two examples I have owned by this Maker, both from this same period, and the other one was marked W crown R period (1830-37). There is a similar carved hilt Sheffield dirk style blade illustrated in the Bill Williamson Bowie Knife sale Catalog, lot 3659, on page 62, that I did in 1996 for the January 28,1997 catalog and sale from Butterfield and Butterfield, San Francisco, California; but has a carved Horsehead hilt, also with glass eyes, by Ibbotson Pease & Co., c.1850, with a sheath that had a missing tip. That knife sold for $7,000 + $1,050 buyers premium and 8.5% CA sales tax = $8,700 + expenses. In this early period of Sheffield Daggers with carved hilts, this one, which is Exhibition quality, is rarer and more desirable with a double edge dagger blade, the orginal and complete silver mounted sheath, and an unheard of carved cross guard.
Overall in the sheath, 10 1/4" long. The carved hilt depicts an American Eagle with glass eyes, with a shell pattern below; a popular motif from the 1830's. The hilt is a 3 dimensionally scalloped and carved one piece of natural material that is 4" long x 7/8" wide x 9/16" thick. From the front / back view, the hilt flares from the cross guard towards the pommel. From the side view, the hilt also flares slightly from the cross guard towards the pommel. The double edged dagger style blade with median ridge is 6 1/4" long, and in fine condition. There are no nicks to the blade edge when you run your finger along the edge, and the tip is very slightly tipped. The blade appears to have been very slightly buffed at least a century ago, as there are small scattered patches of light pitting that were lightly cleaned showing underneath the light buffing marks perpendicular to the blade edge. However, much of the original crocus of Iron polish is also visible, with a few desirable small areas with "new" untouched natural aging and spidering that takes at least a century to develop. Thus, the blade was lightly cleaned once a very long time ago, and has remained in untouched condition for somewhere between 100 and 150 years or more.
The 3 dimensionally carved hilt has naturally occurring areas of aging with a cream coloration, with off white & cream color variations. As expected with large one piece hilts, there is naturally occurring aging, but only a couple of very thin long hair line cracks and two short very thin hairline cracks that show genuine aging. Fancy, sculptured handles like this Eagle head tend to be early and custom made to order vs. later dagger patterns that soon became standardized with the focus on quantity during in the 1840's and burgeoning market in America. The carved American Eagle pattern is extremely rare. The carving has good attention to detail, and the glass eyes are known for articles dating in the 1820's - 1830's. There are no issues for the entire piece, with no damage or repairs; and has been left in as found condition. The original brown calf skin sheath has a hand sewn edge, another small but important detail on 1830's sheaths. The silver mounts are silver, with the early characteristics of scalloped edges and a throat with a thin outside applied lip. There is an unusual stud and ring configuration in lieu of a typical throat button so this could be used with a belt hanger or waist sash. The natural aging and patina of the silver is untouched and very desirable. It must be noted that condition is relative to it's extreme age; i.e., an 1830's weapon had typically lived a long hard life before an 1840's weapon was manufactured; and thus is many times rarer. The same premise is true for an 1840's weapon vs. an 1850 weapon, et al.
This piece is an extraordinary example of exquisite Sheffield artistry, fine condition overall; and is in 100% original condition. It appears that this piece was lightly carried, then "put up" somewhere around 150 years ago. Unique, Fine, Handsome, Sculptured, 3 dimensional carved American Eagle hilt self defense double edged daggers from the 1830's are rarely seen, rarely offered for sale, and are underpriced in the Market considering their extreme age. Add an extremely rare carved cross guard, an original silver mounted sheath, and a Marquis early Maker, and you have a top of the line, connoisseur piece for the most discerning collector / investor.
This one-of-a-kind double edged dagger self defense weapon would make a handsome display piece in any knife, dirk, Bowie, edged weapon, Mexican War, Civil War, gambling, Old West, Western Americana or Military Officer's accouterments collection; as well as an excellent Investment. Most collectors have never seen, much less had an opportunity to own a handsome, eye appealing, early self defense weapon made for a Partriotic American Gentleman such as this without traveling to an sale house, offerding thousand of dollars until you are the last Man standing, and end up owning the piece (plus buyer's premium + plus tax + & ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER, e-CHECKS & ALL MAJOR CREDIT & DEBIT CARDS THROUGH PAY PAL.
