The next year, he joined the Texas Rangers held the rank of Major in theSomerville Expedition of 1842.In 1845, Bell resigned as captain of a company of Rangers to join the U. S. Army in the Mexican-American War. He won distinction at the battle of Buena Vista. He became Texas' third Governor in 1849. Bell served as a US served as colonel in the Confederate Army
Evans was a member of the convention that annexed Texas to the Union in 1845. In 1853 Evans ran for Governor unsuccessfully as a candidate in the American Know Nothing Party. He was elected to Congress in 1854.He served as member of the reconstruction convention in 1868 and as chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court in 1870 and 1871.
