RARE Original Eleanor Roosevelt Portrait By Milton Caniff. Signed. Pencil & Ink:
(Milton Caniff, American 1907-1988)
This is an original illustration drawing portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt done by Milton Caniff. This drawing was done to be printed on the cover of a commemorative folder for the United Nations honoring Eleanor Roosevelt. It was also reproduced in Lithograph form for sale by the government as a 5000 limited edition run. Milton Caniff is best known for his doing cartoon strips and comic books but he also did do a fair number of portraits of famous people. This piece for sale here is quite a find. It comes with a letter of authenticity written by the Curator of The Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco. It was nice to have it examined and authenticated but not entirely necessary as all elements of this piece confirm its authenticity. It's drawn on coquil textured paper which is simply not used for printing. It has Milton Caniff's 333 East 45th St New York Studio address stamped on the back. This is also not done to prints. Lastly it has areas (most notably on the teeth) of white out. This technique is used only on original art to cover mistakes or unwanted marks. Of all the famous people Milton Caniff did portraits of, Eleanor Roosevelt is probably the most famous. This would make for a great addition to any Milton Caniff fans collection. As you'll see in the photos, there is some yellowing of the paper which was not tucked behind the edge of the frame. The piece is matted and framed behind glass, but I have removed, and then put the piece back into its frame. It will require replacement of the backing paper, and I would recommend a UV protective glass to replace the current glass. Please look over all photos for size and details as this piece is being sold as is. Feel free to message with questions and thanks for looking.
