Do not buy this listing if you are investing in gold for weight. This is rare collecting specimens that weigh almost nothing. Born and raised in Charlotte I have met many prospectors while collecting rocks. The man who mined this is not your average collector. For decades he has prospected almost every creek in Mecklenburg county. 30 years ago he found an old dried up creek bed than ran almost parallel with Stewart Creek near downtown Charlotte. He started asking homeowners in the neighborhood if he could search the old ravine in their back yards. Some said yes but most said no. After years of collecting small Quartz crystals from the old creek he found an outcropping of what looked like bedrock and started using a crowbar to pry the cracks and spoon out any material he could get. He found more small Quartz floaters too. After panning the material and crushing the Quartz he found small pieces of gold. He became friends with the homeowner and continued to dig the material for years. The gold you see is that gold. He informed me that he believes the gold and Quartz he found is very close to the source and is probably flood deposit in the ancient Stewart Creek system after it was diverted when they built the neighborhood almost 100 years ago. The area has been developed and is no longer accessible. Where Tuckaseegee road crosses Stewart Creek is very close to where he mined. I have compared his small pieces of gold to other specimens from across the country and around the world and yes they look similar but Charlotte gold seems to have a slightly different luster to it. I am not just saying that because I am from here. The prospector, the Creek and the property are long gone. He cannot get anymore. He has relocated to a spot in Anson county for his future digging. He says Charlotte is loaded with gold but the creeks are to dangerous due to human waste and other factors for anyone to try and prospect. I traded him some of my material for all of the Charlotte gold he found near downtown. It is not much but it has decades of work and risk in it.
