Hired by N.W. Ayer & Son, the advertising agency for The Ford Motor Company at that time, Charles Sheeler had created close to 40 images that highlighted the massive industrial complex over the course of six weeks; from late October until the end of November in 1927. In Sheeler’s own words he was to create an “extensive collection” of photographs of every facet of the company’s huge, nearly complete manufacturing facility. Which, now, only twelve of the negatives still survive. This series was part of a promotional campaign for the release of the Model A.
The prints they have in their collection at The Henry Ford were made from the original negatives received by Ford Motor Company following Sheeler’s commission. Subsequently only a selection of the images were used by Ford Motor Company. The prints were made from the negatives by the Ford Motor Company Photographic Department and were therefore not signed by Sheeler. The “copy negatives” remain with the Ford Motor Company till this day. The industrial complex had a fence surrounding the plant and there were security checkpoints at each entrance to the complex as well as security to patrol the perimeter. They had even increased the level of security at this time.
This makes it not only unlikely, but also impossible for other photographers to have been given the opportunity to take any photographs similar to Sheeler’s. Unless invited by The Ford Motor Company there simply was no access to the plant and only Charles Sheeler had been given this opportunity due to his commission.
