RANDALL 50th COMMEMORATIVE set of four knives; never before offered all new NR:
COMMEMORATIVE set of four knives;
never before offered.
This is a sale.
First three knives are genuine RANDALL knives;
the smallest (the 4th) is a tribute to Bo Randall 50th by Harold Lafler.
Ever since the introduction of the 50th Anniversary knife,
I had admired the look, the lines and the handle of the 50th.
It took me 25 years before I could justify the purchase of a 50th
model, which is the one in this ad. I would never dream of carrying
or using a 50th, so some of the “fun” of ownership was missing for me.
When the small edition of the knife was introduced
as the #27 Trailblazer, I wanted one, but with the
style handle. I thought such a knife would do
true honor to the original. It would hopefully
also be a knife that I could carry and use.
I approached the Randall Shop several times,
but was politely refused every time.
I eventually bought a #27 Trailblazer directly from
famous collector TOM CLINTON at a BLADE show.
Years later, it was my good luck to be attending
the BLADE annual knife show in Atlanta. I stopped
by Capt. Chris Stanaback’s booth, where he had a
number of Randall Knives, which are his specialty.
Among those knives were several with interesting
handles, which Chris said had been re-handled
by James Behring of Montana.
I went to Jim’s booth and saw a number of other
re-handled Randall knives, and spoke with Jim’s staff
at some length about custom work. They informed
me they (Behring) had the authorization of Randall
to re-handle knives.
My dream was becoming possible........
I took numerous photo’s of my 50th, and shipped
them to Behring’s shop, along with my #27.
As the re-handling of my 27 was progressing, I thought
it would be attractive to re-handle a MINIATURE #27,
and have a set of three knives, all in different size,
but with the beautiful - and traditional - 50th style handles and blades.
The set of three became a set of four when I found
the 50th TRIBUTE knife; made by Harold Lafler and
bought it from the NORDIC Knives shop – recently
moved to Boise, Idaho. Mr. Lafler, in his youth,
was a knifemaker at Randall Knives, and was
widely known for his miniatures.
How delightful to have all four knives with
a direct RANDALL connection every step of the way !
The 1st knife is a true Randall 50th Anniversary
Commemorative knife, numbered 260 of 300,
with a surprisingly well-done scrimshaw of
Mr. Bo Randall himself on the handle.
It is as new, with unpolished and un-sharpened blade,
just as it left the Randall shop in 1988.
Accompanied by a special zebra skin sheath
made by Randall’s official sheath maker,
Greg Gutcher of Tampa.
The 2nd knife is a Randall #27 with original sheath.
This knife was enhanced with a special handle by James
Behring of Montana, inspired by the 50th Commemorative.
authorized by RANDALL to repair
and re-handle Randall knives.
The 3nd knife is a Randall #27 Miniature with original sheath.
This knife was enhanced with a special handle by James Behring
of Montana inspired by the 50th Commemorative.
The 4th knife; the 50th TRIBUTE knife; was made
by Harold Lafler and bought from the NORDIC Knives shop
– recently moved to Boise, Idaho. Mr. Lafler, in his youth, was a
knifemaker at Randall Knives, and was widely known for his miniatures.
(Note on appearance: RANDALL Knives recommends the use of RENAISSANCE
micro-crystalline wax to
preserve their knives. I regularly use
that wax to keep
the original finish on my RANDALL knives.
This wax is VERY sturdy, and hard to remove. Sometimes, I accidentally leave a
little behind when I wipe the knives off for
photography. So: If you see a
little “haze” on the knife, it is probably the wax)
