The War of the Fifth Coalition was fought in 1809 by a coalition of the Austrian Empire and the United Kingdom against Napoleon's French empire and Bavaria .
Major engagements between France and Austria, the main participants,
unfolded over much of Central Europe from April to July, with very high
casualty rates for both sides. Britain, already involved on the European
continent in the ongoing Peninsular War, sent another expedition, the Walcheren Campaign ,
to the Netherlands in order to relieve the Austrians, although this
effort had little impact on the outcome of the conflict. After much
campaigning in Bavaria and across the Danube Valley the war ended favorably for the French after the bloody struggle at Wagram in early July.AN INCREDIBLE LETTER SIGNED BY NAPOLEON DATED MARCH 19. 1809 IN FRENCH BUT TRANSLATION IS INCLUDED , SEE PHOTOS. LETTER HAS HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE AS IT IS ADDRESSED TO GENERAL CLARK , HIS MINISTER OF WAR , AS NAPOLEON IS ORDERING TROOP MOVEMENT PREPARING FOR HIS ARMY'S MARCH ON AUSTRIA .THE PREPARATION BEGAN TO TAKE PLACE AT THE END OF MARCH -BEGINNING OF APRIL 1809. INCLUDED IS A WONDERFUL 8 X 5 " PRINTED PORTRAIT OF NAPOLEON , ALL SUITABLE FOR FRAMING. In 1807 Napoleon relocated the Ministry of War to Paris, naming Clarke
to head it. Clarke quickly took control of the Ministry and began
developing its authority, first by taking over the responsibilities of
the Ministry of War Administration and then by encroaching upon other
Ministries' administrative areas. His role in thwarting the British invasion of the Netherlands, the Walcheren Campaign in 1809, lead to the emperor creating him "Duke of Feltre"
(extinguished in 1852 but extended in 1864). Napoleon came to depend on
his authority and he was instrumental in organizing the administration
and building the Grande Armee
in 1811-12. As chief military organizer, he claimed authority over
conscription, the production of all military items, funding, and even
