MUSEUM QUALITY Vintage Baltimore Album Style Applique Antique Presentation Quilt!
This MAGNIFICENT cotton and synthetic album/floral/pictoral/baskets is hand appliqued and hand quilted, with an incredible amount of detail and hand embroidered accents. The quilt was made in the 1950's-60's and came out of an estate in central Missouri. It's based on the famous Baltimore album/presentation quilt made by Mary Hergenroder Simon in 1849, which resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The quilt is NOT a kit and has several interesting quirks and variations added by the maker, including a few example of the broderie perse technique (in some of the birds and flowers, e.g.), gold foil embroidered accents, and a scalloped edge with lacy ruffle. Like with the original, there are many different kinds of birds, a bird's nest, fruit, squirrel, ribbons, Bible, musical instruments, lattice baskets/urns, and amazingly detailed flowers. The maker used everyday household fabrics from the era and all of the meticulous work was done by hand.
It measures 100" X 100" and is in excellent condition, with light age staining in a couple of places and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall and the colors are vibrant. There is quilting around the applique and in a grid design in the background, all at an even 10 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the edge has its original ruffle, and the batting is thin.
This vintage tribute to one of THE MUSEUM QUALITY COLLECTOR'S QUILTS of all time rivals or exceeds the workmanship quality of the original -- A TRUE MASTERPIECE in its own right!
