Moseley & Sons London SERPENTINE Blade Arkansas TOOTHPICK Civil War Bowie Knife :
This SUPERB J. Moseley & Sons German Silver mounted enormous antique double-edged "WAVEY" (serpentine form) Arkansas Toothpick Frontier Bowie knife was made by celebrated London England cutlers Mosley & sons (Established 1730) This ANTIQUE fighting knife was made while still at their OLD ADDRESS of New Street Covent Garden so very likely Pre-Dates the US Civil War
Both sides of ricasso are identically stamped "J. Moseley & Sons New Street, Covent Garden"
I was advised that the "thinking" (reasoning) behind the snake-form blade was that at allowed for more CUTTING EDGE within the same length of reach of the TWELVE INCH fighting knife blade......maybe it also looked SCAREY NO RESERVE and start price is LESS than what I paid years ago, before the fine German Silver (Nickel Silver) 2nd Gen. SCABBARD was professionally madeThere is a "BIN" option for those that find an honest sale process "tedious" :-)
WIDTH at Ricasso = 33.40 mm or 1.3155"
THICKNESS at Ricasso = 5.71 mm or 0.2245" at next "wave" thickness = 5.04 mm, then next wave = 4.34 mm, then at last wave = 4.28 mm
HANDLE is almost certainly WOOD but of what kind?? I could not even guess.... sorry
Originally I had thought that it might be made from the horn of an endangered African mammal, but after careful examination, I cannot be certain what it is made of, .........So WOOD is my best guess
Appears to have been labouriously hand-carved if so??There is possibly a tang-tail attachment NUT (or "Skull Cracker"??) on the pommel, that is made of the same material, but I have not attempted to "unscrew" this
I will leave that to the winning buyer to investigate
The condition has been shown faithfully in the many photographs in my listing
