18K-750 nibOnce one of the most scenic locations in Japan with its bright white sands and 350-year old trees, the Takata-Matsubara coastal pine forest in Rikuzentakata City inspired generations of poets, artists and tourists with its extraordinary natural beauty.
The forest that was so lovingly preserved by its citizens was washed away by the giant earthquake and tsunami that hit Rikuzentakata on March 11, 2011, a natural disaster that caused the death of nearly 20,000 people.
While 70,000 trees of the legendary pine forest were lost forever, a lone 170-year old pine tree withstood the devastation. However, the tree dubbed the \"Miracle Pine“ suffered irreversible damage from exposure to seawater and was confirmed dead by the following year. To honour the recovery and the resilience of the survivors, the City of Rikuzentakata erected a replica of the pine tree as a permanent monument.
To commemorate the 4th anniversary of the disaster and the resilience of those affected by the tragedy, Montblanc has created a limited edition Meisterstück writing instrument from the wood of a branch of the “Miracle Pine”, carefully preserved by the City of Rikuzentakata after the tree’s death.
In the Maison’s ateliers in Hamburg, master craftsmen identified the best techniques to treat and shape the precious wood, transforming it into an iconic Meisterstück fountain pen. “The Meisterstück Miracle Pine Tree carries symbolic meaning as a tribute to the recovery of a community and the hope that comes with it,” explains Jérôme Lambert, CEO Montblanc. “While Montblanc artisans regularly work with unexpected and precious materials to create the Maison’s iconic writing instruments, working with the wood from the Miracle Pine Tree makes each piece even more special as this rare material tells the story of both a tragic natural disaster but also the incredible spirit of the people of Rikuzentakata in rebuilding their community.”Limited to just 113 pieces, the body and the cap of the Meisterstück LeGrand Fountain Pen are crafted from the Miracle Pine’s wood, coated with a high gloss lacquer. Each piece is unique because of the varying grey shades and twisting patterns of the wood caused by the force of the Tsunami and the effect of seawater.
Evoking the appearance of the Takata Matsubara forest before the tragedy, the cone is elaborately decorated with traditional Japanese pine tree symbols.
The cap ring is engraved with “Rikuzentakata 11/03/2011” as a reference the date and location of the natural disaster as well as the pen’s limitation number, while the 18K gold nib of the fountain pen is engraved with a Miracle Pine Tree motif.
The Montblanc Emblem crowns each piece in precious mother-of-pearl.
Only sold in Japan, the Meisterstück Miracle Pine Tree is presented in a wooden square box with illustrated outer box, cardboard outer box, booklet, Certificate of Authenticity and an accompanying letter authenticating the pine tree wood signed by the mayor of Rikuzentaka,
A donation of 20% of the retail price of each writing instrument will benefit organizations including the School Educational Foundation of Rikuzentakata for the purchase of school equipment and AidTAKATA supporting international education among children.
