Mario Calderara [1879 1944] was a Italian aviation pioneer who was the first Italian to obtain a flight license in 1909 and is also credited with building the first Italian seaplane in 1911. Mario Calderara joined the Italian Navy in 1898 and by 1904 had began a frequent correspondence with the Wright Brothers and was able to obtain technical details about flight. With the information obtained from the Wright Brothers he began in 1907 his first experiments with gliding which led to his work with the airplane designer Voisin in France. On March 11, 1909 he flew a plane which he designed and built, the Calderara Goupy for its first successful flight and was awarded by the newly formed Aero Club of Italy pilot\'s license number #1. In 1911 he designed and built his own seaplane which was capable of carrying three passengers and from 1917 to 1919 he was assigned as commander of a new school for seaplane pilots for the United States Navy. Listed for sale is the rare autograph of Mario Calderara signed on a card. The autograph is dedicated and signed \'\'Mario Calderara September 22nd 37-XV\'\' in black fountain pen. The card measures 5.00 x 3.00 inches, it has trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition and will be accompanied by its original transmittal envelope. Theautograph was obtained by a young American collector and is authentic, rare, and is a desirable example of this historically noted aviation pioneer.
