Otherwise, fine condition. Luther Hedden North (1846-1935) enlisted in a
Nebraska cavalry regiment when he was just 16. Much of his military service
was alongside his brother Frank North, who was a very accurate shot. His
unit, Company K of the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry, was stationed at the Pawnee
Indian Reservation. He fought in the Great Sioux Campaign of 1963, quelling an
uprising from the Native American tribe. To defend the Pawnee Indian
Reservation, Luther and his brother recruited four units of Pawnee natives
and used them alongside his own cavalry units. After working alongside the
Native American scouts for so many years, North noted that "Neither the
Wild Tribes, nor the Government Indian Scouts ever adopted any of the
white soldiers' tactics. They thought their own much better." He retired from
the United States Army in 1870, but returned in 1876 when General William
Sherman requested his services. Stationed at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, he
frequently battled Red Cloud and the Oglala Lakota. Later, he became a close
business associate of William "Buffalo Bill" Cody, working in the cattle
business. During this time, "Buffalo Bill" was developing his Buffalo Bill's Wild
West show, which began touring nationally in 1882. For about five years, from
1877-1882, the Norths and Buffalo Bill were partners in a ranch on the
Dismal River, Nebraska. Two items.
