LUCIUS E CHITTENDEN Lincoln's Register of the Treasury SIGNED QUOTE from LINCOLN:
Chittenden, Lucius E. (1824-1900). Vermont politician and peace advocate who served as Register of the Treasury during the Lincoln Administration. ABRAHAM LINCOLN QUOTATION INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY LINCOLN'S REGISTER OF THE TREASURY LUCIUS E. CHITTENDEN. New York: June 5th, 1891. A sheet of cream-colored paper has been folded once to form 4 sides, each 6-3/4 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Inscribed and signed on the first side: "'No! This government does not depend upon the life of any man.' A.L. June, 1864 / Mr. W. J. Bok. / With the kind regards of / L. E. Chittenden / New York June 5th 1891." The bottom right corners of the paper are very lightly bumped. Folded once for mailing. Near fine.
According to Chittenden, Lincoln consulted him on June 29, 1864 about the resignation of Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase. Chittenden claims that he told Lincoln that Chase remaining in office was a national necessity. The sentence quoted here formed part of Lincoln's reply. Lincoln accepted Chase's resignation on June 30. The W. J. Bok referred to most probably is William J. Bok, the brother of Edward Bok, editor or the Ladies Home Journal.
Lucius Chittenden [1824-1900] was a Vermont author, banker, lawyer, politician and peace advocate who served as Register of the Treasury during the Lincoln Administration. Chittenden attracted attention when he stayed at his desk continuously for three days signing 12,500 bond certificates which had to be sent to England by steamship so they could be sold to raise urgently need funds for the Union war effort. This feat injured his hand and wrist and led him to resign as Register.
