LUCIUS E. CHITTENDEN
Detailed two-page ALS to Sarah Edmunds, wife of US Senator and fellow Vermont Republican George Edmunds, offering a gift of engravings from Chittenden's extensive collection. She should not worry about their present value, he writes, because he purchased them for "pennies" years ago.
Autograph Letter signed: "L E Chittenden", 2 pages (front and verso), 7¾x9¾. New York, 1890 December 13. To "My dear Mrs. Edmunds", in part: "I must first ask you to excuse an old fashioned man for writing you on a sheet of old fashioned letter paper, for modern note paper is only good when one has nothing to say. It occurred to me in our demonstration last autumn that if I could find time to go through my drawers, I might find a few engravings, worthy of your acceptance. I have today selected a few as follows - 1. Durer's St. Anthony, an original and very fine impression of this most lovely and characteristic of all the engraved works of Durer. 1519. I send it to you because I think you will appreciate it. It is worthy of being well mounted and framed for preservation. [Detailed list follows.] ... Nos. 11 & 12 are not for you but for the Senator. They turned up in my research today. ... Ask him to accept and treasure them with my compliments! Don't hesitate about accepting the first five numbers on account of their value. It is probably true that in the print shops they would now demand for the St Anthony and the early etchings, more dollars than they cost me, pennies. They were purchased with others in lots many years ago, and cost me very little. There is no way that I can get so much pleasure out of them as by presenting them to a lady of your fine appreciation of a good thing in early art. I made several attempts to see you after my unfortunate illness last fall, but was not fortunate enough to find you at home. If these engravings give you any pleasure, I shall have to confess that you owe it to Mrs. Chittenden who has given me no peace until she almost forced me to go through these drawers, and find something to send you. To this she adds her love and I am cordially yours". As delegate from Vermont, Lucius E. Chittenden (1824-1900) was present at the Peace Conference held in Washington in February 1861 in a final effort to avoid a civil war. Register of the Treasury from April 17, 1861 through August 10, 1864, Chittenden was the first Register whose signature appeared on U.S. currency. During the Civil War, Lincoln sent him to inspect the Union prisoners of war at the Andersonville prison. A lawyer by profession, Chittenden wrote many essays on law and history, the latter including his own experiences in wartime Washington. As this letter attests, he was also an art collector and connoisseur. Sarah Marsh Edmunds (d. 1916), was the wife of George F. Edmunds (1828-1919), longtime US Senator from Vermont (1866-1891). Two vertical folds and one horizontal fold. Fine condition.
