JOSEPH CONRAD. Autograph Letter Signed ("Joseph Conrad") in black fountain pen ink on printed Capel House, Orlestone, Nr. Ashford, March 28, 1917. 8" x 10", 2 pages (1 leaf recto and verso). Very good, fresh and dark example. 28 lines.
Conrad agrees to write to H.B. Irving* on his behalf regarding the production of his novel "Victory".
In part: "As far as I know (through my agent) Irving decided to produce Victory*** almost immediately, as long as we can make it fit with the American arrangements. I am writing to Pinker** to know what has been settled..."
*H.B. Irving (1870-1919), born August 5, 1870, died October 17, 1919; British stage actor; son of Sir Henry Irving; later in life became a legal expert and author. He was a founding member along with Arthur Conan Doyle of "Our Society" (aka "Murder Club"). He appeared in the 1911 film "Princess Clementina".
**J.B. Pinker was Conrad's literary agent and financial advisor.
***"Victory" was filmed in 1919. Directed by Maurice Tourneur, starring: Jack Holt, Seena Owen, Lon Chaney. It was the first Conrad novel to be filmed. Jules Furthman was the screenwriter
Conrad (1857-1924), born December 3, 1857, Berdychiv, Russian Empire (now Ukraine); died August 3, 1924, Bishopsbourne, England; Polish-born English novelist; in French (1874-78) and British (1878-94) merchant marine; later devoted life to writing; famous for the novels "Lord Jim" (1900); "Victory" (1915); etc.
