Contract signed: \"John Ringling.\" and \"4. Sisters Melillo/Manerger (sic) Salvador Melillo\", 2p, 8½x14, front and verso. , 1915 January 25. Headed: \"Artist\'s Contract and Release\". Ringling, on behalf of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, contracts with the \"4 Melillo Sisters\" for \"4 ladies assisted by one gentleman/acrobatic contortion act/Only 3 ladies in parades.\" The sisters, who were managed by Salvador Melillo, were to be paid $125 weekly for their services, which were to begin on or around March 25, 1915. In 1919, the Barnum and Bailey Circus was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus, which had purchased it in 1907 but ran it as a separate entity for 12 years. This contract also gives the Circus the option of renewing the contract for the 1916 season. Also signed by a witness. The youngest of the five Ringling brothers who organized their first circus at Baraboo, Wisconsin in 1884, John Ringling (1866-1936) took full control of the circus after his brother Charles died in 1926, but he had helped in the management and financing of the company long before. Ringling used his business acumen to invest in a growing America in the early 1900s. He was listed as one of the richest men in the world in 1925 until the stock market crash of 1929 almost wiped him out. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light surface creases. Fold running vertically through center of document. Edges lightly worn and creased. Small tears in center of folds. Large tear on top right corner. Small notches on edges of documents. Otherwise, fine condition.
