John Hancock Signed Documentas Governor of MassachusettsA one page partly printed Appointment, beautifully signed at the conclusion by John Hancock as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and countersigned by John Avery as Secretary of the Commonwealth (Secretary of State).
This 12” x 18.5” document dated March 25, 1793 appoints Ezekiel Thompson as a Coroner in the County of Lincoln, Massachusetts. (The document states that Thompson is from the town of Topsham, MA. Topsham and the surrounding Lincoln County are located in the current state of Maine, which was admitted to the Union and became a state twenty-seven years later in 1820).
The document has light toning, minor paper loss at the expected folds and top, and a completely intact Commonwealth of Massachusetts seal. The ink is strong throughout, and Hancock’s signature is dark and beautiful, with his famous flourish underneath.
