-->German 98/05 Butcher Bayonet, RLM 1920 Marked, with Metal Scabbard--> This is a WWI German Type 98/05 \"Butcher\" Bayonet with post-war RLM and 1920 markings. The bayonet has a metal scabbard.
MARKINGS: The RIGHT SIDE of the blade is stamped, \"L. Mundlos & Co. Magdeberg.\" The guard is stamped \"1920\" just below the Mundlos marking. (The 1920 marking is upside down from the Mundlos marking.) The TOP of the bayonet is numbered \"542\" in the area that contacts the rifle barrel. (This would be where the muzzle ring would be located, except that this model of bayonet doesn\'t have a muzzle ring.) In the nearby area TOP of the blade, there remains a \"W\" and a crown marking, along with a tiny bit of another crown marking. There is usually a year marking in this location, like \"18\" or something, except that it looks like it\'s been removed. The LEFT SIDE of the blade is stamped, \"Rich A. Herder - Solingen.\" The nearby guard is stamped, \"RLM\" (The RLM marking is upside down from the Rich A. Herder marking). The METAL SCABBARD has a small number \"12\" on the ring around the throat. There is also a number, \"34\" on the button at the tip of the scabbard. The other side of the button has a crown marking.
RLM 1920 Marking: As near as I can tell, RLM stood for Reichsluftfahrtministerium - the German Air Ministry. Apparently, these bayonets were issued to the German Luftschutz organization - the German Air Police. 1920 was well after the First World War ended, and the Germans were strictly limited on the number of forces they could have at that time.
DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: The blade has a nice old patina. It has some visible pitting on both sides near the tip. The handle has what looks like an old coat of black paint over the wood grips and on the metal pommel itself, and also on the guard (though there\'s not much paint on the guard). The flash guard (on top of the handle) is also painted black. The bayonet guard is stamped \"1920\" and \"RLM.\" The push-button locking/release mechanism is complete. PLEASE NOTE - This part does not appear to be original to the bayonet. For one thing, it\'s far too bright. Also, the metal sticks out (protrudes) almost 1/16 of an inch on the left side (side opposite the button). I\'m guessing that this was a field replacement at some time. The scabbard also has black paint covering most of the sides. The scabbard has a bit dent about 3 inches from the tip, though the bayonet fits well. There\'s an area of old scotch tape wrapped around the scabbard near the top.
