text!
Autograph Document Multi-Signed: "Francis/ Scott Key", "Francis S. Key", "F S Key" (ten
times!) and "Key" (twice), all in text, 4p, 7½x12. District of Columbia. Dated January 19,
1824. Indenture between "John W. Baker of George Town District of Columbia…and Francis
Scott Key of the same place." In part: "Witnesseth that whereas Walter Smith hath this day by
the order and sanction of the said F S Key conveyed to the said John W. Baker by deed bearing
the same date with these presents, a certain piece or portion of land lying in Washington County
in the said District…and whereas the said John W. Baker stands indebted to the said F S Key

being paid or secured to be paid to the said F S Key) and hath passed to the said F S Key his
several nine promissory notes bearing date the ninth day of January in this present year for the
payment of the said sum of thirty five hundred dollars…Therefore…in further consideration of
one dollar in hand paid by said Key to said Baker hath given granted bargained and sold by
these presents doth give grant & bargain and sell unto the said Francis S. Key, his heirs and
assignees forever all that piece or portion of land…." During the War of 1812, one of
attorney Francis Scott Key's clients, Dr. William Beanes, was captured by the British as they
retreated from Washington after burning numerous buildings, including the White House.
Beanes was held aboard a ship in Chesapeake Bay, so Key boarded a prisoner exchange boat
and headed towards the British fleet on September 13, 1814. That evening, the British
bombarded Fort McHenry while Key was aboard the ship negotiating Beanes' release.
Key was so stirred by the cannon fire and the American flag that he wrote a poem entitled
Star-Spangled Banner. "The Star-Spangled Banner", set to music to the tune of an old
English bar song, was adopted as the U.S. national anthem in 1931. A remarkable handwritten
document signed 14 times by Francis Scott Key! Professionally strengthened at the folds.
Accompanied by an illustration and a philatelic envelope. Displayed in two frames hinged
together, not in Gallery of History style: front frame displaying both sides of the four-page
letter (see image) measures 20x16. Back frame displaying the illustration and the philatelic
envelope measures 18½x14½. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity. "As is"
