Richard “Dick” Tracey began as a “footman”-or valet- in 1926 for the Coolidge family. In that capacity, he would run personal errands for the First Family including accompanying a chauffeur to meet their family members and personal guests at the train station, and in later years, the airport.Sometimes he would fill in for the chauffeur as well.In a personal letter to Tracey’s boss (which she also sent a copy to Dick), Mrs. Coolidge extolled his abilities as “not only a good footman” but “he drives a car really good too.”And recommended he be “promoted” to a chauffeur.(That was a big deal in those days when automobiles were gaining a foothold throughout the US.)As security concerns surrounding Presidential travel continued to increase, he returned to his original service as “footman” until his retirement in 1964 during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration.
John P. “Johhny” Muffler, Sr. actually “served “at The White House several times before his employment there. He was part of the Navy Honor Guard stationed in DC.During that time, he met Dick Tracey’s daughter, Marie. When the US became fully involved in WWII, Marie and Johnny married before he headed off to war. When Johnny returned to the states, he studied to become an electrician and took a course on refrigeration. When a position opened at The White House, his father-in-law, Dick Tracey recommended him for consideration.Johnny started as an electrical “apprentice” and moved on to full time employment in 1944.During his 54 plus years he moved to the supervisory position of Chief Electrician where he remained until the Clinton Administration when he became the Senior Maintenance Advisor. It was at this point The White House was getting an update on wiring, fiber-optics, fresh coats of paint etc.It was a logical move as he was part of the famous “Truman Renovations” and knew the ins and outs and challenges hidden behind the walls. It was also during the Truman Administration where Johnny became best known as “the man who kept the Presidency on time”.As featured in the National Geographic documentary “Inside the White House” every Friday Johnny would make his rounds winding all the vintage clocks in the Executive Residence, and several in the East and West Wings- a routine he faithfully executed until his passing in 1999. It is also worth noting that he was loved by the First Ladies. In Nancy Reagan’s book “My Turn” she mentions him specifically (p. 237) and wrote a personal message in it, “To Johnny, who helped make life easier for me for eight years- Best wishes, Nancy Reagan, Dec. ’89.”In Hillary Rodham Clinton’s book “An Invitation to the White House,” written after Johnny’s passing, she pays a beautiful tribute to him and the Muffler family (pp. 36-37.)
Richard T. “Rick” Muffler named after his grandfather, Dick Tracey, began in 1978 as a volunteer in the Calligraphy Office addressing holiday cards during the Carter Administration. He continued volunteering through the following summer. It was at this point he was asked to stay on staff to be apprenticed in the tradition of White House protocol, etiquette and lettering style. After five years of proofreading, addressing envelopes and inscribing photographs he was given additional opportunities to fill in names and dates on invitations, and“Flight Certificates” for Air Force-One and Marine One.As he progressed in his career, Rick was assigned to hand letter the Commission Certificates for various departments within the Executive Office of the President, the Certificates for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Presidential Citizen’s Medal and other official documents. In addition, he was responsible for lettering place cards, escort envelopes, and menus; and as technology advanced, he learned the skills necessary to design programs and other items not lettered by hand. His artistic abilities allowed him to create illustrations and graphics, design and paint life-size objects for photo-op boards at Congressional Picnics and other outdoor displays such as the “Nutcrackers” that stood guard at the East Entrance during the holidays.Rick retired in 2014 having served 6 administrations.
The White House opened its doors on November 1, 1800 and the Tracey/Muffler family was proud to serve a cumulative 127 years within those walls.
