Excavated Revolutionary War Continental wood back button w/ thread - conserved:
$35.00
This is an original button, not a reproduction. It is believed these were made by the French and issued on the pants of the first uniforms of the Continental Army.
This example is complete (they are often missing the wood backing); Would have originally been plated, but this has long ago worn away. Button was excavated from a Continental camp site near King of Prussia, PA by a former colleague (no year noted but most likely in the 1980s).
I do have a non-excavated example listed also (see my other listings).
I have professionally cleaned and conserved this example (see * below).
You will receive the exact button(s) shown. The photos are not manipulated other than cropping for upload/size constraints.
For sizing, refer to the photos. A standard US quarter (24mm) is used to show a comparative size.
I ship on Tuesdays and Fridays.
I have many more historic buttons listed. Please see my other listings.
*I worked for eight years as a professional conservator for a very large privately owned museum. I still professionally clean and conserve historic uniform buttons as a hobby. I use only museum-prescribed mechanical cleaning techniques.
All of the excavated buttons I sell are absolutely authentic and were recovered from private property with permission. I do not invent the history or provenance of any excavated button I sell.
