FIND ANOTHER ONE OF THESE TO COMPARE IT WITH IF YOU CAN !
No one has come forward with a definate explanation of what this item is... so that is why I still own it.
Here is a bit of a PUZZLE item......this came in with some Georgian & Victorian Sunderland Lustre pottery from the North East of England.
It has the purple Lustre around the edge so it could well be Sunderland made. But of course other companies in Staffordshire were producing Lustre items too.
It has come to my attention from \" Vette \" that this is a ladies NEEDLE HOLDER ... it would have been sewn on to the ladies garment - dress or apron using the little holes around the edges... then the top where I think something is missing is in fact where the NEEDLE fits in... well it could well be for this ... its very delicate for such a job though really I think... its only made of fine pottery ...but it would work as a needle holder... not sure its strong enough to be a knitting stick holder though. Plus in my opinion the initials which are painted on the underside of the item would not be seen if it were sewn onto an apron or dress...?! ... but it is a very good explanation as to what it is...and I thank the \" vette \" for their thoughts on the item....they said they had 2 similar items in 45 years of trading....I still cannot find any similar items on google.
To the front ....it has 3 cherubs or children playing at the top ...the one on the left is between something else in the centre and the other two are to the right hand side.
Then two orange flowers. Below it has two ..... U shaped wavy lines with brown leaf like design motif.. I have seen the artifacts of the Vikings use this same design which is known as THE TREE OF LIFE ... below this, getting to the bottom with brown paint circles entwined and a really nice green, orange and brown hand painted dots which look like foliage around the outside of the full shape with a brown line too and finally the outer edge being purple lustre.
Turn it over now.... see the slight concave back, you can see the pierced holes on the outer edge better from here. It is a cream - white background with brown hand painted initials AC in old font with a foliage wreath like design around, all hand painted.
But ... I cannot for the life of me ever remember seeing anything like this before at any sale, private collection or museum a like in all the years I have been buying and selling antiques.
In my opinion this is a VERY RARE item and could well be the only one known - unique but I could well be prooved wrong by someone who tells me they have a box full !
I will only believe that if I see it.
This item has an 18th early 19th Century Georgian look & feel about it to me, it is very well made, pressed into a mold by the look of it.... the front has a slight raised relief design of the 3 Cherubs or children and the 2 flowers at the top and the 2 Tree of Life designs below. All this has then been hand painted on top of the relief molding of the item.
The outer edge has the orange, green & brown dots.. these are raised as well.
It is a raised design in the shape of a ROYAL CROWN in my opinion.
At the top centre it has a flat part and a hole in it.. not a hole right thru as you see on the holes around the outside which were sewn onto something.
This area with it having a flat shelf bottom part in my opinion has had a FINIAL bit of either pottery or something else to LOOK like the central jewel on a Royal Crown. ( see above \" vette \" they said this is where the needle would fit in )
There are 8 pierced holes around the slight flared out edge..seen better from the back as allready stated.
Someone else said its a Christening present.
As an applique.... maybe a furniture furnishing, wall plaque, hanging near the babies crib - cradle.
The crown shaped unidentified item does have some old chips around the edges... you can see these easy enough.. the bottom two square corners have chips too.. again in my opinion this is a CROWN shaped.... rather than it being a Love Heart shape... remember the small flat top centre.
The initials on the back part within the foliage wreath design AC in old font. Pity it is not dated.. but we would be asking too much there wouldnt we.
It is nearly 3 and a quarter inch wide x 3 inch tall x half inch deep.
It is certainly a MUSEUM quality or a SERIOUS private collectors item this which I cannot find anything at all to compare it with...... maybe they were once common but got broken and thrown out..or maybe the idea was short lived and they didnt make many... maybe it is a BESPOKE item and no others have ever been made.
Just had another thought....the back edge is flat... so it may have been sewn onto a cushion or pin cushion or some sort of pot ...maybe for pot pourri.
The later pin cushion dolls are similar with their pierced holes for attachment.. its like that idea.. to be SEWN to something else...its mysterious.
If someone knows anything at all about this can you please let me know, age, place of manufacture and purpose. ...cheers, lee...diggerlee
I had another suggestion from Chris.... they suggested it may be a Baptismal dish used with the holy water from the font to Baptise the child or infant and they have seen similar items made from actual Nacre shell... which have had pearls sewn along their edge and carved too.
So thank you to Chris for their idea of the purpose of the item.
So going on from that idea....... The initials would be seen of course on the inside when used for the ceremony... the flat area could well have had a small hook in it to be hung up at a later time after the ceremony...and be kept as a keepsake. So its maybe more Scallop SHELL shaped than CROWN shaped.
See close up photographs for more details and condition.
The item(s) are shown next to an English 1 penny which is 20mm dia for scale.
Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch
