ORIGINAL LOWBROW MONSTER PAINTING BYDAVE BURKE "DB"SPACE CRITTERSSigned by artist - 199614" x 11" ACRYLIC ON CANVAS - UNFRAMEDIn the style of Xno, Kenny Scharf, Margaret Keane, etc. I first learned about Dave Burke over 20 years ago from the artist XNO who was, in turn, introduced to me by the Green Jello band members. I was friendly with Dave throughout the 1990's and I commissioned him to paint this piece while I was working at Marvel Comics. My friend, artist Greg Jezewski had built a trippy space-themed frame for it which was, sadly, broken in a move. However, the painting is pristine and very representative of Dave's early work. Burke is one of the best "monster painters" working today. I love this piece but the walls are full / tuitions to pay, so please give it a welcome home.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Los Angeles based artist Dave Burke is a self-taught painter who is inspired by all things pop culture from bubble gum sticker art, Dr. Seuss and giant Japanese monsters to fetish fashion, big-eyed Keanabilia, vintage toys, tikis and modern and hard edge design. His early roots in lowbrow garnered him covers for Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's Rat Fink Comix in the mid 90's as well as a two-man exhibit with Roth in 1999. Dabblings in kitsch landed his work alongside Margaret Keane's in The Laguna Art Museum's "Keane and Keanabilia" exhibit, which showcased early and current works by big-eyed art masters. Burke's Tiki art has been published in books such as Taboo: The Art of Tiki and Tiki Art Now! And in 2008 he was part of Forest Lawn Museum's prestigious "In Search of Tiki" exhibition. Burke has exhibited worldwide, and his creations have appeared in movies and on billboards. He has also collaborated with bands Skinny Puppy, Pigface, Tiger Army, Matthew Sweet, Juicehead and in 2007, Burke created the 30th Anniversary "Fiend" logo for legendary horror punk band The Misfits.
