CHARLES SCRIBNERScribner thanks a poet for his sympathy in 1869, the year Scribner's wife died
Autograph letter signed "Charles Scribner". 1 page, 4¾x8, on "Charles Scribner & Co., Publishers and Booksellers" letterhead. April 15th, 1869. Addressed to "Archibald Nilam Esq". In part: "Dear Sir: Your Circular come to hand yesterday, and I thank you for the few lines accompanying it in which you so kindly express your sympathy for me in my prvt affliction I am obliged to you for calling my attention to the edition of your father's poems which you propose to bring out in the fall - Please put my name on your list of subscribers for a copy." Scribner's wife Emma Elizabeth Blair, whom he'd been married to since 1846, died the year this letter was writtern. In January 1846, Scribner (1821-1871) and Isaac D. Baker established their publishing business, Baker & Scribner, in New York City. Baker died in 1850, and the firm became Charles Scribner & Co. in January 1851. Scribner began publishing periodicals in 1859, ten years before his oldest son, John Blair Scribner (1850-1879), joined the business. In 1870, "Scribner's Monthly" was first published. Four years after Charles' death, his son, Charles (1854-1930), joined the firm, which became Charles Scribner's Sons in 1878, the year before John's death. Another of Charles' sons, Arthur Hawley Scribner (1859-1932), joined the firm in 1881. Lightly toned and creased. Stray ink marks in blank areas. Pencil notation in upper left corner. Ink smudged at some words. Letter has been folded in two and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
