In part: "...The charge has been stated that "I am a Secessionist" and that the charge isfounded on a paragraph which recently appeared in the "New York Evening Post" in referenceto a sermon alleged to have been preached by me. / I deem it my duty to utterly deny andexpiate the charge as an atrocious columny ... a thought so disloyal to my government andcountry... / I took pains to define my position in reference to the support of the Governmentin this solemn crisis..."
