BRITISH ROYAL NAVY COAT BUTTON, HORNWORKS BATTERY, YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA 1781
This British Royal Navy seaman’s coat size button was found at the sight of the Hornworks Battery near the south east corner of the British defenses on the south shore of the York River at Yorktown, Virginia. The British used a detachments of sailors to man some of the cannons on naval carriages from scuttled ships in the York River. It is 7/8” diameter & is in VERY good condition with a dark bronze/green patina & still has the shank still on the back. It was bought directly from the family of a local historian that found it in the 1920’s & comes with a certificate of
