KIMBALL, NEWELL K. WHITNEY - HFSID 47600 BRIGHAM YOUNG, HEBER C. KIMBALL, THOMAS BULLOCK and N.K. WHITNEY
Three dollar Mormon currency.
Currency signed: "B. Young", "H.C. Kimball", "Thos. Bullock" and "NK Whitney", 3¾x2. Great Salt Lake City, 1849 January 20. In full: "GOOD to NK Whitney or bearer three DOLLARS on demand". On Monday, January 1, 1849, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Presidents Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball went to the home of Joseph Smith's nephew John Smith (Hyrum Smith's son) and ordained him as the Presiding Patriarch in the Church. Also on that day, their first one dollar bill was issued. LATER THAT MONTH, THREE DOLLAR NOTES WERE ALSO ISSUED. Many other bills were paid out to those who had deposited gold dust. The production of these handwritten bills was a slow and laborious process. Every bill carried four signatures, those of B. YOUNG, H. C. KIMBALL, N. K. WHITNEY and THOS. BULLOCK, Clerk. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 28, 1848 ended the war with Mexico and set the southern boundary of Texas at the Rio Grande. Upper California and New Mexico were ceded to the United States for a payment of $15 million. Brigham Young and his followers, who had fled what they considered religious persecution in Illinois to settle in Mexican territory, found themselves once again within American boundaries. Young issued a call for a convention to "all citizens of that part of Upper California lying east of the Sierra Nevada". When the convention met in Great Salt Lake City March 8-10, 1849, it agreed to petition Congress for a territorial form of government. Meanwhile the convention adopted a Constitution for a Provisional State of Deseret, pending action by Congress. An election was conducted on March 12th. Among those elected (candidates were unopposed): Brigham Young, Governor; N.K. Whitney, Treasurer and Associate Justice; and H.C. Kimball, Chief Justice. Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 21¼x16½.
