authentic 19th century Samuel Robb "Rose" Cigar Store Figure:
Authentic American 19th century Samuel Anderson Robb Cigar Store Figure. Outstanding example with exceptional carving. Notice how this figure is a step above most other cigar store Indian cigar princesses holding a rose ( many of those lesser figures mentioned are most likely from other competing carving shops imitating Robb ). 74" tall and the bottom footprint of the base is 19" x 23".
On a carving scale of GOOD - BETTER -BEST, this figure is in the "Best" category. Whether it be the subtle motion of the figure stepping forward, the gentle gazing to her left, uneven angled cigar boxes in the right and left arms, waist feathers that are all not the same length, or even the way her hair gently comes to a point off center in the back, a discriminating eye can recognize an exceptional carving. Everywhere you look, this carving just has a little extra effort and skill. The exceptional talent of Robb makes this figure look like a real person, not just a carved piece of wood. Easy to recognize why Robb is considered THE top American Artist in Wood of the second half of the 19th century.
You can find cheaper, lesser figures, but is that what you really want?
Would be happy to answer intelligent polite questions. My great grandfather was a member of the Tonkawa Indian tribe, so please spare me ridiculous racist comments. These 19th figures were used simply because the native American peoples introduced tobacco to the world. Good 19th century figures arenoble renditions andNOT the comical or degrading images the 20th century or more modern figures can be. I am proud of my heritage and I do not need anyone else to try to degrade that fact or the fact that we are ALL Americans.
