Product Description
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver gallery inkstand; an addition to our ornamental office silverware collection
This exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver large silver desk standish has a rectangular form.
This inkstand is fitted with a hallmarked gallery, embellished with impressive pierced scrolling foliate and floral ornamentation, incorporating a shield shaped vacant cartouche to the anterior side.
The shaped, incurved rim of the body of the sterling silver inkstand is ornamented with a paralleling applied gadroon decorated border.
The internal frame of the stand is divided into different sized compartments by pierced decorated dividers reflecting the same design to that of the body.
This antique hallmarked silver inkstand is supported by four impressive bracket style feet embellished with scrolling leaf and bead decoration.
The two smaller internal compartments retain the original square glass ink bottles with cut glass ornamentation in addition to impressive stepped design to the upper plateau.
The underside of each bottle bears a cut glass star motif.
The ink bottles retain the original plain hallmarked silver cylindrical mounts fitted with hinged hallmarked covers.
The rim of each circular cover is encircled with an applied gadroon style border.
This large silver ink standish was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Walter & John Barnard.
Condition
This antique inkstand is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.
There are natural fire marks to the underside of the base, as to be expected in keeping with age.
The ink bottles are in perfect condition.
Fullhallmarks struck to the gallery and bottle mounts, in addition to part to the ink bottle covers and underside of this large silver desk standish are all very clear; the maker's marks have some minor wear in keeping with age, but remain legible.
