Antique Blue on White Transferware Porcelain Hair Receiver Foo Dogs/Floral: $18
This appears to be a very old hair receiver yet it is in wonderful condition. No cracks, chips, crazing or repairs. The blue is quite vivid and the detail on the foo dogs and flowers is intriguing. While unmarked, there are signs of its age. The 3d last shows a dollop of porcelain at the bottom, the 2nd from last shows "peppering" (light specks of carbon left in the porcelain when kilns were not heated by clean electricity), and the last shows an indent on the top middle rim. It is not a chip (it is glazed) but a manufacturing defect. All these issues are common to early glassware production.Hair receivers were used from Edwardian times until the 50's. Hair from brushing was saved in them. The saved hair was used to stuff small hair net bags to support the elaborate hairdos, or to stuff pin cushions/ small pillows. An unusual find and terrific foo dogs!
