Here is a great Antique American Banjo Clock for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself! This might even by an Aaron Willard clock.
The clock now has some newer replacement hands that were meant for a Howard #5. Also, a plexiglass piece has been painted black and put inside the case to act as weight shield. Some revised pics reflecting the replaced hands and shield will be posted soon.
Beautiful American Made cherry case clock here. What makes this clock even more special is that the clock belonged to the the estate of a descendant of Brigadier General William Seward Jr. The clock appears to have been made in the early 1800s from the clock case and movement manufacture.
Brigadier General William Seward Jr., whom had various NY Regiment commands and was in command of the 3rd Division for about a week in 1865 during the American Civil War. Seward is probably best remembered for being part of the troops with Phil Sheridan that destroyed Jubal Early's division in 1864.
General Seward's father was the Governor of New York, a, US Senator, and then Secretary of State to President Lincoln. The General's father was one of the targets of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators, whom attempted to knife him to death, the night Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre.
No specific marking on the frame that the piece was owned by Seward, just passing along the provenance that we know that was passed along by a long time respected like an older case. The movement looks very similar to those made by Aaron Willard. there are no marking as such on the plates of the movement or the clock to verify that.
Not certain yet if this is an original Aaron Willard Case or one of many reproductions that came later. If a reproduction, the banjo clock certainly is an older one. See a biography of Aaron Willard below.Input from the clock folks out there that know more about this clock maker's works than ourselves would be much appreciated. Your identity would be kept anonymous. Thanks.
We also obtained an older Shelf Clock at the same time that appears to have all the appearances of an Aaron Willard as well that we will be selling separately in our online stores. See listing number 122477879377 for that other clock. Just put that listing number into the search line and the item will come up.
The wood case is all there. Still has the original brass rails alongside the center throat. Beautiful cherry case all around. Good lacquer finish on them still.
The wood case shows some finish loss most notably along the corner edges, still looks good. The clock face and pendulum doors are still securely attached to the case. Check out the beautiful old gold colored ball top metal finial on the clock. Has a ding in it. The black metal plate that should be between the pendulum bob and the weight is not in place (probably how the reverse painted tablet was broken).
The concave glass over the clock face is intact. Heavy brass bezel. The lock pin is on the side of the bezel, but the plate it should go thru is not on the side of the case. The reverse painted glass on the pendulum door over the clock face is "Victory on Lake Champlain". Unfortunately it is cracked horizontally across the entire glass tablet. Not much paint loss, so could still be saved by gluing back together. Won't be perfect, but will retain the original beauty of the clock. Some minor flaking going on. Nice detailing to the wood case on the front, sides.
We have only wiped down the wood case with Murphy's wood cleaner and orange oil, could still used a good cleaning to bring the original beauty of this piece out to its' full potential.
Nice looking metal face on this clock. The face is repainted and white with black numbering and minute details on the plate around the clock face. Looks to have been repainted from the back of the face. Obviously the Aaron Willard name and Boston is not on the face. There were no clock hands on this banjo clock when we acquired it.
Nice looking brass movement in this clock. See pics. Older movement here. The front plate has some waviness to it, so not a high volume machine stamped plate here.
Design of movement looks like an Aaron Willard one. There is a a crack along the back plate of the movement that emanates from one side for about 3/8". The pendulum and weight are with this clock. Look appropriate to this clock. The suspension spring and hanger are in place. The brass cable that the weight hangs on appears to be in good condition and the hanging pulley wheel is in place.
The clock has been serviced by Clock Doc and is in running condition. This clock is being sold in running condition now. The clock will come with a wind key, not the old hand crank variety.
This was definitely a quality clock for its' time. The clock stands 40.5" tall (37" w/o finial), by 10" across, by 3-13/16" wide. The clock face is 6-3/8" across. This is a heavy and large clock, so expect the shipping costs to reflect that. The weight will be shipped in a separate box for safety purposes. Expect some reassembly of the clock. You do not find this banjo clock maker's work available very often (if an Aaron Willard), so do not miss this one.
