Made of cast iron and measures approximately 3.5" x 2.5" x 1.75".Embossed on the lid "SELF CLOSING. / For Matches & C. / Patented. Dec. 20. 1864. / D.M & Co. / New Haven.".
There is an example of this case shown in "The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia", by Francis Lord. The description states "Barracks were generally heated by wood stoves and the match boxes shown were nailed or screwed to the barracks' wall. These are both made of cast iron. The bottoms of each are ribbed for striking matches".
