6\" American Plain Bell Steam Whistle with Valve for Traction Engine, Locomotive :
$725.00
This is an antique 6 inch diameter Plain Bell Brass or Bronze American Steam Gauge and Valve Company Steam Locomotive Steam Whistle, complete with built in valve. Though it is not marked, it was made by the American Steam Gauge and Valve Company. A photo and information of this type of whistle is found on page 88 of the popular book titled, \"The Engine\'s Moan\" by Ed Fagen. It measures overall just at 24 inches tall including the valve and weighs just under 29 pounds. The length of the bell itself is 12 inches. It is a full 6 inches in diameter.
PLEASE NOTE REPAIR: It has a 1 1/4 inch threaded inlet that is from a reducer. The hex inlet on the bottom had (what appears to be) some brazing repairs some years ago as some cracks were found in the hex, and some later re-appeared again, and a pipe reducer has since been inserted into it to strengthen it, taking it from 1 1/2 inches to 1 1/4 inches.
It does work and sound great on 100 psi of air from my air tank. Makes a very mellow, deep sound. Valve works very well and springs back and forth as it should. Other than the hex nut issues with the reducer in the bottom, this whistle otherwise appears to be in good condition overall. I see a few minor scuff marks around the top of the bell as expected on most steam whistles. Please look closely at the photos as this is exactly what you will be buying.
American steam whistles are very hard to find, and one this size is extremely rare. Itwould be great for display as a museum piece, or to possibly use on a full size steam locomotive railroad train, factory, sawmill boiler, ship, tugboat, riverboat paddle wheeler, steamship, steamboat, steam traction engine or steam tractor, etc. It is as-is, of course. No guarantees since it has the reducer due to the repairs in the hex nut on the bottom. However, I have no reason to believe that it wouldn\'t work for many years to come as it is. It worked fine on 100 psi of air, but I have not tested it on steam.
