32" MIDCENTURY MASTERWORK JOSEPH TRIPPETTI MODERN ENAMEL COPPER PAINTING PLAQUE:
HERE’S A TRUE ORIGINAL MASTERWORK BY AMERICAN ENAMEL ARTIST JOSEPH TRIPPETTI (1923-) – A SIGNED AND TITLED SURREALIST ABSTRACT ENAMEL-ON-COPPER PAINTING KNOWN AS “AFTER THE HUNT”!
Please Note: There is an original artist’s paper label on the backside of this enamel-on-copper painting that includes the letters N.S.F. This typically means Not For Sale, which would indicate Trippetti kept this monumental work in his personal collection.
To this end, this flawless enamel painting, which itself measures approximately thirty two inches (32”) in length by twelve inches (12”) in height, is comprised of two separate plaques joined together at the center to create a very complex Surrealistic abstraction. Joseph Trippetti selected some unusual dream-like imagery that is somewhat Miro-esque and/or Picasso-esque, including two different odd-shaped tables both holding potted plants that look like sunflowers but with human characteristics. There is a large vase on the left side of the composition that sits next to a large bowl on one of the tables. And there is a large compote-bowl in the center of the composition that appears to be holding a wedge-shaped piece of pie or possibly a slice of pizza. Strewn across the entire composition are several elements that look like pieces to a puzzle. In addition, there are several elements that have the appearance of buildings, or at least parts of buildings. All of the visual elements in this enamel-on-copper painting transition from one thing into another, from imagery that looks representational to something purely abstract.
The enamel color palette is also very intense, ranging from vivid reds to deep blues and oranges and yellows, and then transitioning to more somber colors like brownish-black or simply greyish-white.
The enameling itself was executed in free-hand drawing and painted directly onto the copper sheets. And please note: this is not one of Trippetti’s cloisonné enamels even though it still has that general appearance.
Another component to possibly understanding the visual imagery in Trippetti’s enamel-on-copper masterwork is the title “After The Hunt” Does this title directly tie to the Surrealistic abstract composition in such a way as to explain its bizarre symbols? Or is the title only a reference to the possibility of Trippetti coming home from an outing into the New Hampshire woods, essentially after the hunt, and then creating this monumental work of enamel art?
This enamel painting is mounted within its original artist-made wooden frame, the interior of which is painted off-white as a way to accentuate the intense enamel color palette. The overall dimensions of wood frame are forty and five eighths inches (40 5/8”) in length by twenty and one half inches (20 1/2”) in height.
Condition: Again, the enamel painting itself is flawless -- absolutely amazing and beautiful! The wood frame is in excellent and clean condition with a few very small markings, minor scuffs, and a couple of very small impressions.
Signed “TRIPPETTI” in the bottom right corner of the enamel painting. And there is an original artist’s paper label on the backside, which is actually a mailing label, that reads: From: Joseph Trippetti Center Tuftonboro New Hampshire / To: “After The Hunt” 44” X 20” Copper Cloisonne Enamel On Copper / N.F.S.

Joseph Trippetti was born in Philadelphia in 1923. While attending school at the University of California, Berkeley, he was drafted into the army, where he served from 1943 to 1945. Upon leaving the army he returned home and attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art from 1946 to 1949. Although he studied painting and printmaking, he decided to specialize in silversmithing. During the same time he also apprenticed in the studio of the ceramist John Butler. He completed his course work in silversmithing at the Sheffield School of Arts and Crafts in England from 1950 to 1951.
While in England, Trippetti developed his love for medieval imagery through the study of Renaissance tapestries. Upon his return to the United States in 1951, he moved to Ossipee, New Hampshire, to join Butler, who had opened a new pottery studio there. The following year, Trippetti opened his own studio focusing on the art of enameling, which combined his love of silversmithing and pottery. For inspiration he looked to medieval tapestries. The flattened and abstracted figures rendered in bold colors became recurring motifs in his work. After several years of experimenting with various techniques, he settled on cloisonné as his preferred medium. While this tedious and time-consuming method is usually associated with traditional imagery, he used his masterful talents to exploit the medium’s full expressive possibilities. It became a modern medium in his virtuosic hands.
Although medieval-inspired imagery permeates his work, more contemporary themes and motifs are also explored, including abstract and nonobjective imagery. The surfaces of his plaques can be jewel-like, glistening, or matte depending on the desired effect. Trippetti’s enamels quickly won recognition. His work was accepted into numerous juried and invitational exhibitions. He was awarded prizes at prestigious exhibitions like the Wichita Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition and the Miami National Ceramic Exhibition.
His work is part of the collections of the Wichita Center for the Arts and the Lowe Gallery, University of Miami, as well as those of the Currier Museum of Art, the New Hampshire Historical Society, and the Long Beach Museum of Art. He also created public commissions of sculpture in steel. His contribution to the field extended beyond art making. Trippetti held the position of supervisor of the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1955 to 1958, and two years later he became a full-time teacher at the Worcester Craft Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1962 he returned to Manchester, where he accepted the position of executive director of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. He retired in 1969. In 1980, to honor his work and contribution to the cloisonné technique, an exhibition was organized by the Prestige Art Gallery in Peabody, Massachusetts, and a book, Joseph Trippetti and Cloisonné, was published. Trippetti now lives in Cincinnati, where he continues to produce fine enamels.
