1-OF-A-KIND EARLY Star Wars HISTORY!
AMAZING PRE-RELEASE lineage & FULLY RECORDED PROVENANCE!
Up for sale is simply one of the greatest Star Wars items to ever hit the open market: An original 1976 STAR WARS Pre-Release GLORY BOOK with AMAZING lineage and provenance - INCLUDING - the fact that this was PERSONALLY OWNED BY George Lucas & HAND-SIGNED (PERFECTLY & LEGIBLY) by the CREATOR HIMSELF - back in 1976 no less!!
GeorgeLucas assembled this aesthetically and historically significant 21-pageportfolio of ultra high-quality production stills and gave it to his on-setstill photographer, John Jay, back in July of 1976. This was shortly after theprinciple live-action filming of Star Wars was finally completed. Back then,Lucas and the film were experiencing a plethora of problems, all of which hadprofoundly threatened the completion of the production. After negotiating throughmore than anyone\'s fair share of trials and tribulations, Lucas returned to theUnited States with the movie footage in his hands at last. He was so relievedand thankful to get through all of the overseas mishaps that when he finallydid return to the US he created this memento as a \"thank you\" gift toJohn Jay for his hard work on the film.
Flashforward to 2007: For the 30th anniversary on Star Wars, the quintessential bookaccounting the entire history of George Lucas\' signature creation was released. It meticulously chronicles every step in the journey on how he was able to puttogether his now legendary epic masterpiece. The book entitled, \"THEMAKING OF STAR WARS: The Definitive Story Behind The Original Film, Based OnThe Lost Interviews From The Official Lucasfilm Archives\" was written byNew York Times best-selling author J. W. Rinzler. At the beginning ofchapter 10, on page 218 Rinzler writes:
\"Ashattered Lucas made a couple of stops before returning to California: Mobile,Alabama, to visit Spielberg on his set; and New York City to say hello to BrianDe Palma. Lucas had assembled booklets of black-and-white production stills,on-set photography of Star Wars, which he gave to his friends, includingfilm critic Jay Crocks.\"
This is one of those books!! Besidesthe obvious, what makes this particular book so wonderful is that it was giftedto John Jay, the original photographer who actually took all ofthe photos contained within it, and so it\'s THE ARTIST\'SPERSONAL PORTFOLIO! The book is also HAND signed by George Lucas andStar Wars producer Gary Kurtz to Jay personally. Most appropriately, and, very thoughtfully, the book was signed on the last page, which is thebackside of the production still of George Lucas directing the finale of the movie.Remarkable!
THE GEORGE LUCAS SIGNATURE IS AMAZING!!
If you\'rean autograph collector, then you know - It\'s nearly impossible to find alegible signature on Lucas. Almost 100% of all his autographs are what you\'dhave to describe as a mere \"dismissive\" squirrelly squiggle. This onecertainly is not. It\'s actually as nice as it gets - VERY clear, legible, and easy to read. It\'s perhaps the single nicest authenticsignature to ever be sold on Lucas. George really took his time with this one.He was signing it to a respected colleague who was also a friend, and so itmattered! This is an amazing item to own. Again, this particular book, given toJohn Jay, is arguably the best of all the Glory Books.That\'s because it\'s also the artist\'s portfolio - which makes ita double whammy!
JohnJay\'s more than fantastic work comprises the entire contents of this and ALLthe other books that Lucas gifted out. The book consists of 21photographs of extraordinary high quality and clarity. These are NOT studiodupes distributed for publicity purposes; these are actual prints off thecamera negatives bound in a volume. They\'re NOT lithographs. Additionally, asyou can see from the photo, this portfolio has the ORIGINAL working title onthe cover, \"The Star Wars,\" along with the now famousRalph McQuarrie pre-production art of Luke Skywalker directly above it. Alsochronicled on the same page [218] of Rinzler\'s \"The Making of Star Wars,\"isan important clarification as to when the film\'s title changed. It mentionsthat it wasn\'t until on or about the same time as these books that\"Lucashad dropped The from the title, at which point it became Star Wars\"- Another goldennugget of information whichcoincidespoignantlywith this portfolio, making itevenjuicier. Notice on its final page (back of still 21),rightabove George Lucas\' signature - TheThe in Star Wars hasbeen dropped!
This isquite the historic and early \"Star Wars\" memento. Actually, thismight be the earliest Star Wars memento that was specifically designed tobe a memento, if that makes sense. I think it did to Lucas when he gifted itout. Clearly, this book belongs in a museum or archive. Which brings me to theother important part of the recorded history and lineage of this particularitem: This portfolio was, in fact, and, indeed, in the possession of aprestigious archive. It came from the Motion Picture & Television PhotoArchive in Van Nuys, CA. How do I know this? Simple. This item was acquiredin a live sale held in California by the well-known sale houseButterfield & Butterfield. The sale was held back in early 2001. That\'swhen Butterfields was briefly owned by the Internet cyber giant . I haveemail correspondence in regards to this particular purchase, all with thesale # and the specific item #, and, the most important information -theconsignment history - as explained by Butterfields\' own Katie Peters. Sheexpounds:
\"OurButterfields consignor of the Star Wars Album was the Motion Picture &Television Photo Archive in Van Nuys, CA. It was formerly given to the Archiveby John Jay (The back cover of the album contains a white 2-1/2 x 1 inchsticker reading: All photographs contained in this portfolio are by John Jay.These images are not to be reproduced in any manner without the express writtenconsent of Lucasfilm LTD. All rights reserved.) It was originally a gift givento John Jay by George Lucas and Gary Kurtz in appreciation for his work on StarWars. Only a handful of these exclusive albums were made.\"
The above printed-out email correspondence willbe included with this book along with other pages regarding the 2001 salepurchase. This is as important and as rare as any piece of movie memorabiliaever gets.
