MONTBLANC 310: A LEGEND
This can easily be the most beautiful Montblanc pens of the 60s! The model 310 is one of the flagship Montblanc pens at the time. In the decade when it was made, this pen together with the 72/82/92 were the flagship pens, and were more expensive than almost all other pens in the lineup.
Montblanc was offering a lifetime warranty on this pen when it was originally sold. The 310 pen model is based on the famous model 22, one of the most complex Montblanc pens with approximately 20 parts making the pen. However the similarities end there, the 310 is a high-end pen, a pen deserving the "1" as a first number, which was given only to the Meisterstuck/Masterpiece pens. It features a highest grade Precious Black Resin and a thick gold filled trimmings. The cap ring is beautiful and unique, gold filled and giving the pen amazing look.
Montblanc 310 is vintage cartridge/converter fountain pen (while model 320 was the piston version). The pen has a classic schooly design, with a solid black acrylic body and gold trim. The black acrylic was well handled to increase its durability against scuffing. The pen will look as shiny as new even after several weeks of use. The cap contains a gold ring at the crown from which the gold plated clip is attached. The bottom of the cap also has a gold ring with the words “Mont Blanc Germany” inscribed. Where the cap mates to the body there is a gold ring and at that point is where the body unscrews from the nib section to allow access to the cartridge ink supply area. The Montblanc well-known white snowflake is found on both the cap and the bottom of the pen. The pen is small and light which makes it easy to carry and use for day-to-day purposes. It comes with a well balanced, gold plated medium, hooded type nib which, unlike other classic regular designs, is integrated to the feed section of the pen. This helps prevent the ink from drying out during use. The pen dates to the 1970s, where Montblanc nibs where made of pure gold. When uncapping the pen, user can notice the ink window. The size is so convenient to let enough light inside to help users see the amount of ink left. Montblanc 310 only made 1976-1979.
These were one of the first pens not to feature a breathing hole on the cap, i.e. keeping the nib airtight, not allowing it to dry, keeping the moisture inside the cap. This was only possible with the new corrosion resisting materials at the time and most importantly the silicone socket inside the cap that allowed made for a perfect fit section on cap. In addition the cap has a very nice and distinct "click" sound when opening or closing the pen.
Back in 1906 a Hamburg banker, Alfred Nehemias and a Berlin engineer, August Eberstein recognized the signs of time and decided to produce simplicissimus pens. After a short period of time Wilhelm Dziambor, Christian Lausen and later Claus Johannes Voss took over the business and thus laid the foundation for the future internationally successful company Montblanc.
Their first model was the "Rouge et Noir" in 1909 followed in 1910 by the pen that was later to give the company its new name: "Montblanc". The name Meisterstück ("Masterpiece" for export) was used for the first time in 1924, for the top lines of fountain pens. A trademark identified with Montblanc is the white star with rounded edges, representative of the Mont Blanc snow cap from above, the symbol being adopted in 1913. The number "4810," the mountain's height in meters, is also a commonly recurring theme.
The pen features a stunning super smooth superb gold plated nib. The nib is smooth and the paper and with zero scratching, it produces a wonderful writing with line variation, a joy to write with. Montblanc signature stars are located both on the cap and turning knob. The nib is super smooth, the feeder takes considerable amount of ink. A true Montblanc Masterpiece legend as its name implies; he perfect fountain pen. The pen is in absolute NOS, new old stock condition, never used except testing, nearly impossible to find in such condition. The Montblanc ad on the last picture probably says it best:
"Beyond question ...MONTBLANC is one of the finest pens you can give or own. Regardless of price, the MONTBLANC possesses an air of elegance, of classic beauty, of impeccable good taste. Long known as Europe's leading fountain pen, the MONTBLANC has superb craftsmanship ... unbelievably smooth writing action ... perfect balance. Its point is 14 or 18 karat gold or gold plated. Its giant ink capacity is due to an ingenious filling system. It is proclaimed by many pen experts here and abroad to be the finest fountain pen ever designed. Aeromatic-ink control permits safe use while flying. You will treasure it as a personal possession of value and distinction, something you will be proud to own and use."
