Merle Haggardwas an Americancountry musicsinger, songwriter, guitarist, andfiddler. He was born inOildale, California, toward the end of the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released fromSan Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launched a successful country music career. He gained popularity with his songs about the working class; these occasionally contained themes contrary to the anti–Vietnam Warsentiment of some popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s. Some of his hit songs include "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive," "Branded Man," "The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde," "Mama Tried," "Okie From Muskogee," "Workin' Man Blues," "Hungry Eyes," "The Fightin' Side of Me," "I Wonder If They Ever Think of Me," "Kentucky Gambler," "Things Aren't Funny Anymore," "It's All in the Movies," "Movin' On," "I Think I'll Just Sit Here and Drink," "Going Where the Lonely Go," "A Place to Fall Apart," "Let's Chase Each Other Around the Room," and many others.
