1931 GRANVILLE AIRCRAFT CORPORATION LETTERHEAD & GEE BEE MODEL Z & D RACER PLANES PHOTO
THIS GEE BEE LETTERHEAD IS ONE OF THE RAREST & MOST DESIRABLE GEE BEE ITEMS YOU WILL EVER FIND -- I'VE HAD IT ABOUT 20 YEARS & HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER!!!
IT WAS PRINTED CIRCA 1931-32 DURING THE TIME OF THE MODEL Z & R-1 SUPER SPORTSTER RACERS
Am currently listing original items from famous air racing pilot & aircraft designer Benjamin (Benny) Odel Howard, Bob Hall (Gee Bee designer), 3 of the 5 Granville Brothers (Gee Bee racers), & Howell "Pete" Miller (Gee Bee designer). Most of these items are truly museum quality artifacts & most likely have never before been seen. Some of the documents possibly shed new historical light with very juicy inside-info & amazing aeronautical tidbits! These extraordinarily rare artifacts are truly the Eldorado of golden age of air racing & aviation items. Puts you right there in the times like experiencing it as it happened!! See my other listings for moreoriginaldocuments & photos from air racing great Benny Howard & others! Keep checking as it will take me a while to list them all...
(2) item lot ~ (1) photo & (1) letterhead.
Magnificent super high quality vintage 6" X 10" (inches) B & W matte finish high silver content 1931 original photo showing the NR77V Gee Bee Model Z "City of Springfield" & NC11043 Model D "Black Cat" racer planes parked together at the Cleveland National Air Races ~ scarce view!
And for prominent proud display with the photo is a prize original Gee Bee Letterhead from my collection which I am offering for the first time in about 20 years (I can guarantee this is the first time the public has ever seen this). This is one of those ultra scarce items where not many survived. The Granvilles did not have much money, lived off cases of beans, & all their winnings went back in to building more planes....so doubt they could afford to buy much fancy company letterhead! How I wish I had the entire letter! Only the top letterhead remains, but you can still see just a bit of penned writing at the lower trimmed margin. Measures about 8.5" X 2 3/4". Features colorful Gee Bee logo at center with two flying Canada Geese. Below that is:

Truly a once-in-a-lifetime find!!!
The first two photos show exactly what you get in this group, front & back. The rest of the photos show details of the group.
IRONICALLY IN THE MODEL Z PHOTO YOU GET TO SEE AN UP CLOSE VIEW OF EXACTLY WHAT KILLED BAYLES IN THIS SHOT ~ IT WAS THE GAS CAP THAT WAS NOT SECURED PROPERLY & IT FLEW OFF AT 300 MPH SHATTERING THE CANOPY & KNOCKING BAYLES UNCONSCIOUS...THUS CRASHING TO HIS DEATH.
UNFORTUNATELY 1931 DETROIT SPEED TEST ENDS IN DEATH FOR BAYLES
The end of Lowell R. Bayles, Springfield Mass., speed flyer occurred as his plane struck the ground and burst in to flames at Detroit, Michigan, Dec. 5th as the noted flyer was attempting to shatter the world's speed record. Bayles was flying 75 feet abovet he ground when death overtook him. Bayles' body could be seen in the road near the flaming wreckage of his Gee Bee Super Sportster.
LOWELL BAYLES WAS KILLED IN THE GEE BEE MODEL Z AT WAYNE COUNTY AIRPORT IN LATE 1931 WHILE ATTEMPTING WORLD SPEED RECORD FOR LAND PLANES. HE WON THE THOMPSON TROPHY AT THE CLEVELAND NATIONAL AIR RACES IN THE Z EARLIER THAT YEAR.
Overall excellent to Near Mint vintage condition for both items with some very minor light glue residue from mounting in old album on reverse of letterhead. Please see the above photos for exact condition.
