w/all edges of the pages having a gilt application as well as the
school's insignia on cover. This fabulous book, printed in 1913, is a compilation of the 28-year history of the prestigious Groton School in
Groton, Massachusetts. Many famous families sent their children Among
the most famous alumni pictured in this book are Franklin Delano
Roosevelt, Dean Acheson, Averell Harriman and Percy Haughton (Harvard
football coach). Among other famous family names are Peabody (the
school's founder), Whitney, Auchincloss and offerdle. The clarity of the
photographs dating back to 1885 is outstanding. For EACH year, there are
full-page, group pictures of the members of the school, the graduating
class, the school football team, the school baseball team, the Grotonian
editors (from 1889) and the crew squads (from 1897) totaling over 150
photographs. there are many shots of campus buildings and several pictures
of faculty members. there is very little text but in most of the group
pictures, the subjects are identified.
This book is is done in an over-sized, yearbook-styled format measuring 15 by 10+ inches and printed on over 200 pages of glossy stock. FDR is featured in "The Graduates, 1900" and identified under the photo as "F. Roosevelt." FDR is also pictured in class pictures "1896-1897", "1898-1899", "1899-1900" and in "A Group Of Graduates Present At The Consecration Of The Chapel." FDR attended the college preparatory school before heading to Harvard.He was elected to the New York State Senate in 1910 and was appointed Secretary of The Navy in 1913, the same year as the publication of this rare text. Produced in extremely limited quantities and only available to past graduates or employees of the elite institution. Groton School is a private Episcopal college preparatory boarding school located in Groton, Massachusetts, United States. It enrolls about 380 boys and girls, from the eighth through twelfth grades. Tuition, room and board and required fees in 2014–15 amounted to $56,700 (with books extra); 38% of the students receive financial aid. The school is a member of the Independent School League. There are many famous alumni in business, government and the professions, including Franklin D. Roosevelt.
This is a rare piece of Americana.
