1913 Photo Album GB Holbrook Hyannisport MA Mansion Europe Tour Taft Springfield:
This is listing #2 for this photo album. In order to show you more photos than the 12 allows, I've made a second listing under the same title. This listing has an exorbitant starting price. If interested, offer at listing number 1, under the same title, not at this listing.
One of the finest vintage photo albums we've listed. From the estate of G.B. Holbrook, President of American Paper Company in Springfield, Mass, who built the fine home documented in this album in 1905 next to the famous water tower on the waterfront in Hyannisport. Holbrook was born in 1846 in Swanzey, NH, joined the US Army at age 15 and served in the Civil War, and spent most of his life in Springfield where he rose to the top of his company. He built the house documented in this album in 1905. It burned in 1910, but was rebuilt the next year, and Holbrook lived there until his death in 1922. In 1988 the house was bought by the artist Sam Barber who lived there until 2012.
About half this album is devoted to domestic scenes, and about half on a grand tour of Europe in 1913. There are many photos of the house and its interior, and of other grand homes and their interiors--perhaps in Springfield. They had a beloved cat. The European photos are in major capitols in Austria, Germany, France and England, and probably others. I think many of them are in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Czechoslovakia. The album is 9x11.25" and holds 312 photos. All but two are tack-pasted into the album and two are loose. One of these, a photo of a large early auto with 4 occupants, has the caption on the back, "Mr. & Mrs. G.B. Holbrook William Adams, Chauffeur J.E.J. Buckett, Courier Vannes, May 16, 1913". If only all photos could be so well documented. Most photos are large for snapshots, 5.75x3.5". Perhaps the courier or chauffeur was the photographer, because Holbrook and wife are in several photographs together. Album and photos are in good condition. The album itself is from a Springfield, MA company.
I'll go through the album and list some highlights.
Album opens with photo of GB hugging his wife, her cheek in his handPhoto of their large auto with familyTwo photos of dignitaries in carriage--one of them is President Taft in Top hatStriking photo of battleship, probably in Cape Cod BayPhoto of Provincetown with monument from a boat2 Photos of the Hyannisport mansion under constructionPhoto of the water tower4 exterior photos of the mansion after completion, with lawns in place2 photos of an interior panelled sitting room, Mrs. Holbrook reading5 photos of women, all in white, picnicing on the beach, wading in the shallow water (I assume these are daughters and daughters in law)SchoonerProvincetown from the sea3 photos of battleships
At this point the album switches to the Europe tour--it often switches back and forth from American scenes to Europe. I think the photos in this album are from one trip to Europe, in part because there's only one photo of a liner.
7 photos of either the Azores or Portugal: ox-pulled sleds, ship in harbor,2 photos of GibralterPhoto of two-stack ocean liner and photo on deck4 photos of ladies in a faux-airplane--studio shots2 pages of photos of Florence, ItalySeveral pages of photos in Austria-Hungary, PraguePhoto Hotel Loib, CarlsbadSeveral pages photos in Berlin, Brandenburg Gate, etc
Back to US:

We then have, oddly enough, 6 photos from the American west of a pair of men hunting. One photo is of a man with a sheep over his shoulder. Three of their tent camp with deer hanging from the trees, and one beautiful image of an Indian Teepees with hills in background.
We then have 22 photos of what appears to be Florida, a family home, and several images of southern trees and fruit, a speedboat, the driver, and early stone buildings.
Back to Hyannisport, a man lying face down on the front yardPicnic photosAnother large home with family photos2 photos of Mr. and Mrs. HolbrookAnd finally on the last page we seem to be back to London, the Thames waterfront, an early timber and stucco clock, draft horsesFollowed by two photos of a snow clad street, of a church and clock tower and what may be a Civil War monument
I haven't mentioned everything by any means. I only wish there was some way to see the back of these photos without damaging them. A few have arrows on them, pointing to rooms or buildings, that must be explained on the back.
Don't forget to visit that second listing, under the same title but outrageously priced, to see more photos.
