Description:
Great Original Antique Wrought Iron Late 18th, Early 19th Century Blacksmith Made Candle Spike Circa 1770-1820
Nice piece of late 18th century, early 19th century American blacksmith made lighting fresh out of a New England Collection of early primitives!
The design of this piece was to have it hammered into the wall or beam of a home or building to support a wax or tallow candle in the formed in candle cup. The blacksmith who created this piece also formed in a bottom curled loop design that would allow the piece to accommodate the handles and hanging hooks of various other lighting devices such as hanging lanterns. The piece was formerly displayed in a home with with a hanging tin foursided lantern bail handle on this support hook. Could also be used to hang various other pieces such as betty lamps, and even double tallow candles across their uncut center strings.
There is a nice broad shape to the candlesocket on this piece. The diameter of the top opening is just slightly less than 1 1/4 and the size does taper down the length of the candleshaft. The piece measures overall 5 3/8\" in length (from the end of the curl to the end of the candlespike) and 5 3/8\" from the top edge of the candlespike to the bottom of the curl. The curl area measures 1/2\" wide.
There is some minor pitting and oxidation to the piece overall from age. The top candle rim has a approx 1/8\" area of loss to the edge (we tried to capture this in the photographs). None of the aforementioned condition statements really detract from the overall rustic presentation of the piece and again, given its age it is still in solid shape and ready to grace any Colonial Period of Country Home.
Offered on a seven day listing with , a low starting offer and we will include Free (Domestic 1st Class) Shipping with this sale.
