Description Photograph Album Depicting a Tour of Halifax and Newfoundland Aboard the S.S. Portia of the Red Cross Line. Halifax and Newfoundland: 1890. Collection of 68 albumen photographs mounted on album leaves measuring 7 x 6", each accompanied by a handwritten caption in the margin. 60 of the images measure 4.75 x 3.75", four measure 4.75 x 2.5", and four measure 6.5 x 4". The album documents a tour of Newfoundland aboard the S.S. Portia, a steamship operated by Bowring Brothers Ltd, part of their "Red Cross Line" that offered luxury passenger service from New York to Halifax beginning in 1884. The first two images depict the Portia and its passengers, followed by seven images of Halifax, two images of Bedford, NS, a view of Cape Race taken from the ship, a photo of an iceberg captioned "first iceberg," and a view of Cape Spear, Newfoundland. The next 16 images depict St Johns--the narrows, Signal Hill, the police headquarters, fisherman's cottages, street views, a photo of a derelict building captioned "haunted house", and more. The rest of the album depicts small villages and towns in coastal Newfoundland: Virginia Waters (four pictures), Quidi Vidi (six images, including interesting photos taken "under the flakes" aka fish docks), Belle Isle (one photo), Conception Bay (2), Topsail River (2), Placentia Harbor (5, including a photo of the old English Church), Mount Pleasant (1), Whitbourne Junction (2--the "first house" in town and the sawmill/railway station), Salmon Cove (1), Blornidow (1). The album concludes with three photos taken aboard the Portia, including a group photo showing the passengers and crew, followed by three views of Little Bay in Newfoundland. An excellent collection of early Newfoundland images. Disbound, front cover detached, lacking rear cover, album leaves curled, first image foxed and faded, the rest very clear & sharp, with occasional discoloration.
