A particularly nice example of Timothy O’Sullivan view of Cooley’s Park in the Sierra Blanca Range, Arizona. Made during the Geographical & Geological Explorations & Surveys West of the 100th Meridian under the direction of Lt. George M. Wheeler during the years 1871-1873. This view appeared in Volume 1 of the albums produced. One can see in the view the beginnings of the ranch of pioneer scout, guide and explorer Corydon Eliphalet Cooley who was known for his respected relationship with the Apache Peoples.

Timothy H. O’Sullivan (c1840-1882) began his introduction to photography as a teenager working in the studio of Mathew Brady. By 1861 he served in the Union Army probably engaged in more civilian tasks including surveying and making photographs. In 1862 following his discharge he was employed again by Brady’s team working with Alexander Gardner’s Studio making iconic views of the Civil War. He joined the US Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel under Clarence King in 1867 and by 1870 was in Panama to work with the survey team of the isthmus then back to join the Wheeler in 1871 until 1874. He spent his remaining years in Washington, DC employed with the Geological Survey office.
