1870s Photograph Album SS Mary & Nicolas College Lancing, 21 Albumen Prints:
SS Mary & Nicolas College, Lancing, 1870’s. Unique photograph album featuring tipped in albumen prints documenting Saints Mary & Nicolas College in Lancing, West Sussex, England during the 1870’s. Photographer is unidentified, images range from medium to rich in tonality with some fading at edges and rippling to pages. Several images represent renderings of the yet to be completed Chapel which is seen in several of the images in progress. The Chapel was begun in 1868 and formally opened in 1911. Other images show interior views as well as exterior views of the buildings at that time. One view shows a very early version of the “toll bridge” crossing the River Adur to Lancing. Saints Mary & Nicolas College was founded in 1848 by the Reverend Nathanial Woodard as a charitable means to meet the needs of the local seafaring and farming residents who were unable to send their young men to public institutions. By 1854, Woodard purchased the 500 acre farm on the Downs where the campus of Lancing College now stands. These are some of the earliest photographs showing the college in the 1870s.
Album cover is velum over beveled boards with impressed gilt lettering and gilt floral decoration, showing some wear and soiling overall. Front hinge is cracked but holding well, gilt edge pages are light board held at binding with original linen tapes showing some waviness and varied soiling and sporadic foxing with little effecting images. There are a total of 25 leaves with 21 photographs affixed one to a mout ranging in size from 3 7/8 x 5 5/8 inches to 5 7/8 x 8 inches. The album measures 7 ½ x 10 inches.
