Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808-1901) began his endeavors as a painter of portraits before studying the photographic arts in Boston with Francis Fauvel-Gouraud. He partnered with Albert Sands Southworth in 1843 forming one of the earliest and most important photography studios in America. He married Albert’s sister Nancy Stiles Southworth in 1849. By 1862 (some accounts report 1863) the partnership dissolved with Hawes continuing to work into the 1890s. A detailed biography of Hawes and Southworth can be found in Hannavy’s Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography.
