1860s UNION ARMY CIVIL WAR ENLISTED SOLDIERS BRASS SHOULDER SCALES / EPAULETS:
$80.99
Very Rare and original , 1860\'s Civil War Period, Enlisted Man\'s Brass Shoulder Scales / Epaulets. These original Shoulder Scales measure approx. 6 3/8” long and 3 7/8” wide across the widest point of the large, bottom portion. They are made entirely of Brass.
Shoulder Scales were worn as a dress distinction on the uniform coat and jacket of enlisted men of all branches. They were never worn on the sack coat. They were attached to the uniform by a tongue on the bottom of the scale, which slid through a brass attachment sewn onto the shoulder of the uniform coat that was called a scale slide. At the collar was a second piece called a scale button, which turned and locked the scale onto the uniform. These were issued in three different patterns: 1.Privates, Corporals and Musicians; 2.Sergeants; and 3.Members of Noncommissioned Staff.
We believe that the Pair of Scales offered here are of the Private / Corporal type - they are the proper size for the Private / Corporal type but one is finished on the underside like those issued to Sergeants and the other is not. Although the two Shoulder Scales came to us together and are similarly worn with age, they may not have originally started out as a matched pair.
This wonderful, original Civil War Period, Enlisted Man\'s Shoulder Scales came to us with a small group of Civil War Shoulder Scales and Cap Badges and is 100% unconditionally guaranteed to be original and of the period 1860\'s. They are in good to very good condition with dents, tarnish and wear to the top surfaces andsignificant oxidation and loss to the iron elements on the undersideas can be seen in the scans below.
A very rare and original, Civil War Period Pair of Enlisted Man\'s Brass Shoulder Scales and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
