1845 Letter written from Vergennes, VT:
$12.50

Letter written from Vergennes, VT and mailed from Troy, NY (slightly over 120 miles south) by B. & D. C. Holcomb to Messrs. J. Smith & Co of Hartford, CT, November 4, 1845.
Burt Holcomb (b. April 1817, Granby, CT; d. 16 Jan 1883, Paris, IL) moved to Vergennes, VT, probably around the time this letter was written, and went into the dry-goods business with his brother, D. C. Holcomb (no definitive records have yet been found), operating under the name B. & D.C. Holcomb. The business does not seem to have prospered and sometime in 1848 the Holcomb brothers left Vergennes.
Messrs. J. Smith & Co were apparently dealers in bridles and harnesses.A5
