$16500.00
Circa 1820 Massachusetts Shelf Clock made by Aaron Willard on Washington St. in Boston. Aaron Willard was born in Grafton, Massachusetts on October 13th, 1757. He was trained to make clocks by his older brothers Benjamin and Simon. The Willard family is by far the most famous group of clockmakers in Colonial America as they dominated the clock business in Boston area during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Aaron worked in Roxbury at a different location and shop from his brother Simon. Aaron Willard was a prolific maker and his shop employed a vast array of craftsman. At that time the Roxbury community was comprised of over a dozen other clock makers, cabinetmakers, dial and glass painters and gilders. The overall dimensions of the clock are 37 1/2 X 12 1/2 X 5 1/2 inches. The Mahogany case with New England White Pine Secondary with applied French feet, removable hood, and applied fretwork. The \"kidney shaped\" glazed door opens to a locally painted iron dial with gilt time track decoration and the makers signature in the lower section. The signature is original and in an excellent state of preservation. The eight day brass timepiece was made by Aaron Willard and closely resembles the layout of the Simon Willard \"Patent\" timepiece however in the shelf clock the pendulum length is considerably shorter and the suspension bridge and pendulum is mounted on the rear plate. S/H/I is free for continental US addresses and the clock will be delivered to your home or office by one of our experienced Fine Arts Movers.
